CCBC Announces the opening of a new Moot Courtroom
Nov 10, 2016Faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the Board of Trustees joined Dean of Instruction Dennis E. Seymour of the School of Business, Education, Justice, and Law, and CCBC President Sandra L. Kurtinitis recently for the dedication of the brand new Moot Courtroom on the Dundalk campus of the Community College of Baltimore County.
“The Moot Court will serve as a laboratory in which students from programs such as Criminal Justice, Human Services and the Police Academy can actually get real life courtroom experience to support their work in the classroom,” states Kurtinitis.
This new state-of-the-art facility features a projector for displaying evidence, a portable microphone for the witness and attorney stands, and videotaping capability. “Several attorneys on the CCBC Foundation Board were very vocal and supportive for the need and importance of the moot court,” noted Kenneth Westary, Vice President of Institutional Advancement.
The moot courtroom will provide realistic scenario-based training on courtroom testimony and the judicial process. It will be open to CCBC students, local high school students, police recruits, and public safety officers. It will also be available for meeting or training space for community partners. “The Moot Courtroom allows CCBC to continue a tradition of utilizing experiential learning to improve student success,” noted Seymour.
CCBC Faculty and staff are expected to lend their support in role playing. “We would love to use the moot courtroom for scenario role playing for our public safety partners,” said Linda Fleischer, Criminal Justice Studies department chair and Corrections coordinator.
The Baltimore County Police Academy plans to use the space to provide in-service and specialized training for their sworn officers on how to testify in court. “It is definitely nice to have this available to us,” said Captain Dennis J. Delp of the Baltimore County Police Training Academy, located on the CCBC Dundalk campus.
The Moot Courtroom is located in the Career Building, Room 103, on the Dundalk campus of CCBC. For more information, please contact Tanya Jones, Dundalk Campus Director, at 443-840-3740.
