Sociology students study abroad in Havana during spring break.

Sociology faculty members Myron Strong and Ann MacLellan led a study abroad program to Cuba during the April 2017 spring break. The faculty members chose Cuba for its unique and rapidly changing social and political circumstances, which provided an excellent case study for sociology students.

The group of 14 participants included CCBC students, faculty and staff. Participants lived with Cuban families for a full cultural immersion and experienced a range of learning opportunities that furthered their study of culture, race, and gender. They met with experts and scholars at Old Habana, Casa Museo de Africa, the University of Habana, the University of the Arts, the Cuban National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), and numerous museums and historical landmarks. The group also spent time at the Akokan Community Project, where they explored efforts to provide community housing and programs in a poverty-stricken area outside Havana, and they spent a day at the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve in Las Terrazas, where they learned about environmental preservation and local agricultural efforts in Cuba.

Rebekah de Wit, director of Global Education, coordinated arrangements for this study abroad experience. For more information about study abroad opportunities at CCBC, call 443-840-4907 or visit www.ccbcmd.edu/studyabroad. Applications will be available starting in the summer for these upcoming study abroad programs: Service Learning for the Health Professions in Costa Rica (January 2018), Comparative Drug Policy in Vancouver (spring break 2018), Aviation History in Berlin (late May 2018), Automotive Innovation in Berlin (late May 2018), and Human Development: East Meets West in Spain and Morocco (late May 2018).

In addition to the study abroad options, CCBC’s Travel Studies program through the Continuing Education Division also offers international travel study opportunities.
