Annual Business Plan Competition serves as a launching pad for CCBC entrepreneurs

Baltimore County, MD — Community College of Baltimore County’s Center for Business Innovation announces its 4th Annual Business Plan Competition for aspiring CCBC entrepreneurs. Supported by a generous three -year grant from the Philip E. and Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation, Inc., the center will offer $28,500 in seed money to the top six award winners, including $10,000 in seed money to the winner.
The competition, which is open to current CCBC students and alumni of CCBC credit and non-credit programs who apply by Oct. 14, 2016, teaches participants how to develop strategic, marketing and financial plans as they build their business plan. In late January 2017, the finalists will pitch their ideas in CCBC’s version of “Shark Tank,” where a panel of independent judges determines the winners. In addition to seed money, winners get to work with CCBC’s top business students who help them create websites, develop marketing and sales materials and other essentials needed to launch their businesses.
"This is the greatest experience in my life I have had so far,” says Malika Amanova, owner/operator of “Wish of a Woman (WOW!)” a mobile make-up service, and the winner of last year’s business plan competition. “It helped me launch my business with all the must-have tools. The seed money and great advice I received throughout the competition are now helping me grow my business day after day. The competition made me believe the sky is the limit and turned my dreams into achievable goals."
“For the last several years, we’ve been operating much like a start-up,” remarks Dennis Sullivan, executive director of the CCBC Center for Business Innovation. With a budget of $2,000 for the winners and support from mentors, students and local Chick-fil-A franchisees, the program has been able to help launch nine new businesses. “Today, we’re very excited to take the Business Plan Competition to the next level with the Ratcliffe Foundation support and help even more CCBC students and alumni launch new businesses.”
“This truly has been life-changing for many of our students and alumni who have always dreamed of being their own boss, but just needed some guidance,” notes Rose Cramer, chair of CCBC’s Business Studies Department.
“We know there are a lot more great ideas among our students and alumni if they are just given an opportunity,” says Tammira Lucas, project director at the Center for Business Innovation. “We have the expertise to help them develop their ideas – and we have the resources to help make it happen.”
