Nov. 2 lecture provides insight, research and tips for caring for the elderly and the caregiver

Baltimore County, MD – Community College of Baltimore County presents Redefining Aging: A Caregiver’s Guide to Living your Best Life, a Nov. 2 lecture by best-selling author and CCBC professor Ann Kaiser Stearns. Scheduled for 7 – 9 p.m. in the Administration Building, Rm 120 at CCBC Essex, Dr. Stearns will share how one can have fulfilling life experiences even while dealing with the stress and fatigue of caring for an elderly family member.

Dr. Stearns’ lecture is based on her latest book Redefining Aging: A Caregiver’s Guide to Living Your Best Life. The book shares stories and lessons from caregivers as well as research and insight to help caregivers achieve the best life possible for those they care for as well as themselves. The lecture will challenge one to think differently about caregiving and one’s own aging.

Some expected takeaways from the lecture include:
  • Learning how to distinguish between normal aging vs the early signs of dementia.
  • Reducing your own risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Gaining myth-busting insights and problem solving skills for meeting the challenges of caring for an elderly loved one.
  • Learning how to resist the “stereotype threat” of ageism.
  • Embracing the positive life experiences still possible despite the stress of caregiving.

Dr. Stearns is a longtime Behavioral Science professor at CCBC and the author of four books including the national bestseller Living through Personal Crisis. She has traveled the country and lectured on topics related to resilience and healing. Dr. Stearns has received excellence in teaching awards from the Maryland Psychological Association, Johns Hopkins University and Loyola University Maryland. She earned a bachelor’s in Philosophy from Oklahoma City University, a Master of Divinity from Duke University and a Ph.D in Psychology from Union Institute and University.
