Fab Lab Equipment

Here's a rundown of each piece of equipment, the software we use, and the file types we accept.

All materials are subject to approval of lab staff. Please bring proof of material (receipt, manufacturer's mark....etc.).

Epilog Laser Cutter

Status: UP

Specs: Bed size: 12x24". 40 watts. Cuts materials up to about 1/4" thick.

Compatible software: We use CorelDRAW X5, but you can design your file in any program Corel can open. Adobe Illustrator (commercial) and InkScape (open source, free) are both potential alternatives. Some more popular potential formats are: *.cdr, *.ai, *.pdf, *.eps, *.ps, *.prn. Corel can also import and trace bitmap files such as .jpg or .gif. When run your file you will need to edit your file in Corel so that your cuts are "hairline" width. All other vectors will be engraved.

Acceptable Materials:
wood, laserable plastic (cannot contain harmful chemicals, ex. PVC), corian, avonite, delrin, glass, leather, marble, matboard, paper, melamine

Availability:
The laser cutter is available on a first-come first-served basis. However, you can reserve it ahead of time. Reservation form can be found here.

Universal Laser Cutter

Status: UP

Specs: Bed size: 24x18". 60 watts. Cuts materials up to about 1/4" thick.

Compatible software: Same deal as the Epilog, except you will have to color your hairline cuts red.

Acceptable Materials: Same as the Epilog Laser.

Availability:
The laser cutter is available on a first-come first-served basis. However, you can reserve it ahead of time. Reservation form can be found here.

ShopBot CNC Router

Status: UP

Specs: Bed size: 4x8'

Compatible software: We use PartWorks V2.5 and PartWorks 3D to run your file. However, you can design in a program you feel comfortable with, such as Adobe Illustrator for more 2D files such as basic furniture design or SolidWorks, 123D Design, or a different CAD program for 3D modelling projects such as carving. Accepted file formats, V2.5: *.crv, *.dxf, *.dwg, *.eps, *.ai, *.pdf. Accepted file formats, 3D: *.v3D *.stl, *.v3m, *.3ds, *.x, *.dxf, *.lwo, *.sbp, *.wrl, *.obj.

Acceptable Materials:
wood, formaldehyde-free MDF, foam
Other materials such as aluminum and brass may be cut upon request

Availability:
The ShopBot CNC Router is available on a first-come first-served basis. However, you can request a reservation for it on Mondays and Fridays. Use the reservation form found here.

uPrint Plus 3D Printer

Status: DOWN

Specs: Build volume: 8x6x6" Material: ABS plastic. Layer Resolution: 330 to 250 microns, depending on the setting

Compatible software: Only accepts *.stl files. Model anyway you feel comfortable, as long as you can export to a *.stl. Our 3D modelling options: 123D Design, SolidWorks, Google SketchUp. Note that *.stl is not a native file format for Google SketchUp, however we have a plug-in that will export an *.skp file to an *.stl file.

Availability: The uPrint is available on a drop-in basis. If it is unavailable when you wish to use it, we will put your file in a queue and print it when the machine is available.

Material Cost: $10 per cubic inch

Afinia 3d Printers (2)

Status: UP

Specs: Build volume: 5x5x5 Material: PLA biodegradable plastic Layer resolution: 150 micron

Compatible Software: .stl files

Availability: The Afinia printers are available on a drop in basis. If they are unavailable when you wish to use them, we will put your file in a queue and print it when the next machine is available.

Material Cost: $7 per cubic inch

Roland Vinyl Cutter

Status: UP

Specs: Max roll size: 24" Material: vinyl and sheet copper.

Compatible software: Can cut straight from .pdf format. Autotrace feature for bitmap formats such as .jpg.

Availability:
The vinyl cutter can be reserved on Mondays and Fridays, and is available on a drop-in basis on all other days. Reserve time here.
