Admission Information

Application Deadlines

Admission into the nursing program is competitive and takes place in the fall and spring. Forms should be completed by March 15 and September 15 for optimal consideration in the next available semester. A new form must be completed every semester that one chooses to make application for admission.

Students are encouraged to make a financial plan prior to entry since full-time employment is not recommended during the clinical nursing sequence. Information relative to scholarships and loans is available from the Financial Aid office and the Nursing Office.

Admission Criteria

A. Criteria for admission into the Nursing program:

1. Achievement of a GPA of 2.25 or higher, calculated from courses that are required for completion of the nursing program regardless of other college coursework completed.


2. Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 14 pre-clinical credits, including:


a. BIOL 220 Human Anatomy and Physiology I with a grade of C or higher. BIOL 110 may be a prerequisite for BIOL 220. The option to challenge or receive a waiver for BIOL 110 is available. Students planning to enter the nursing program should address this alternative with an academic advisor, case manager or counselor.


b. BIOL 221 Human Anatomy and Physiology II with a grade of C or higher.


c. ENGL 101 College Composition with a grade of C or higher.


d. PSYC 101 Introduction to Psychology.


e. Eligibility for college math requirement (must meet the prerequisite for the college general education math requirement).

f. Satisfactory completion of Dosage Course (NURN 005 or ALHL 001).


NOTE: 
In order to progress through and graduate from the nursing program, students must successfully complete all science, math, English 101 and nursing courses with a grade of "C" or better.

B. Additional requirements for admission to NURN 150 - Fundamentals of Nursing


2. Documentation of current CPR (per the American Heart Association Health Care Provider),including adult, child, infant and choking

3. Proof of Health insurance coverage, which must be maintained throughout the clinical program.


4. Completion of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.

5. Completion of Criminal Background Check.

(The college will make provision for all clinical students to meet this requirement.)

Advanced Placement Options

Advanced Placement options are available for transfer students from a state-approved diploma, baccalaureate, or other A.D. nursing programs. Transfer students are accepted on an individual basis after appropriate placement or challenge examinations. Upward Mobility options are also available for LPN's. Legal Implications

Upon successful completion of the Associate of Science degree in Nursing, the graduate applies to take the National Licensing Examination (NCLEX-RN). Permission to take the NCLEX-RN examination is established by law and granted by the Maryland Board of Nursing. The Board may deny a graduate this permission for a variety of reasons. This includes:

8:316 (a) Is convicted of or pleads guilty or nolo contender to a felony or to a crime involving moral turpitude, whether or not any appeal or other proceeding is pending to have the conviction or plea set aside.
