ARTS 101 - 3 Credits The Studio Experience
Focuses on the interrelationship of hand, eye, and mind in
creating expressive works of art; includes studio work in two- and
three-dimensional art, lectures, critiques, and museum visit. 2
lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week
ARTS 102 - 3 Credits Elements of Visual
Thinking I (Design)
Develops the use of formal elements and principles in projects
conceived and executed from the individual student’s point of
view; provides preparation for additional art courses involving
applications for the concepts developed in two-dimensional design.
Students with no prior art experience are encouraged to take ARTS
101. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week
ARTS 104 - 3 Credits Art Appreciation
Studies design in architecture, crafts, plastics, and graphic arts
of contemporary civilizations with concern for historical sources;
investigates interaction between these areas and other forces that
mold the culture as well as expressive possibilities of many
materials. Prerequisite: (RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 or LVR 2) and (ENGL
052 or LVE 2)
ARTS 105 - 3 Credits History of Art I
Provides exposure to Western and World art including influences on
Western Culture as expressed though architecture, painting,
sculpture, and related arts; history of Art I includes prehistory
to Proto/early Renaissance. 3 credits: 3 lecture hours per week.
Prerequisite: (ENGL 052 or LVE 2) and (RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 or LVR
2)
ARTS 106 3 Credits History of Art
II
Provides exposure to Western and World art including influences on
Western Culture as expressed through architecture, painting,
sculpture, and related arts; history of Art II includes Baroque to
the present. 3 credits: 3 lecture hours per week. Prerequisite:
(ENGL 052 or LVE 2) or (ESOL 052 or LVE 2) and (RDNG 052 or ESOL
054 or LVR 2)
ARTS 107 3 Credits Women in Art
Explores the lives and works of female artists from various
historical periods and cultures; explores the obstacles female
artists faced and their role in society. Prerequisite: Placement
in ENGL 101 or successful completion of (ENGL 052 or LVE 2) and
exemption from or completion of (RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 or LVR 2)
ARTS 110 - 3 Credits Drawing I
Explores the theories, practices, and appreciation of drawing;
using a variety of drawing media, students will investigate
landscapes, interiors, still life and then figure through
completion of sketch books and assignments in addition to class
work. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week
ARTS 111 - 3 Credits Drawing II
Emphasizes composition and expression and the additional
development of theories and practices of drawing; includes figure
drawing, critiques, and lectures and may include drawing from
landscapes, interiors, and still lives. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours
and 2 hours laboratory per week. Prerequisite: ARTS 110
ARTS 115 and 116 - 3 Credits Life Drawing
I and Life Drawing II
Explores advanced drawing theories and practices emphasizing life
drawing and anatomy; provides models. 3 credits each: 2 lecture
hours and 2 laboratory hours per week. Prerequisite: ARTS 111 for
ARTS 115; ARTS 115 for ARTS 116, or permission of program
coordinator
ARTS 118 3 Credits Elements of
Visual Thinking 2 (Color)
Studies physical characteristics and the psychological effects of
color through exercises in various design applications; emphasizes
investigation of color effects that are used in applied and fine
arts. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week
ARTS 120 3 Credits Painting I
Investigates various approaches to painting emphasizing basic
methods and techniques of painting and color mixing; includes
critical examination and discussion of classwork and outside
assignments from the standpoint of formal organization. 3 credits:
2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week Prerequisite: ARTS

ARTS 121 3 Credits Painting II
Develops painting skills and methods emphasizing compositional
organization and the use of color as an expressive element;
provides models for figure or portrait studies and includes
critical analysis of assignments. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours and 2
laboratory hours per week. Prerequisite: ARTS 120 or permission of
program coordinator
ARTS 123-124 3 Credits Watercolor
Painting I and Watercolor Painting II
Develops skills in painting and sketching techniques using
transparent and opaque matter-based media; explores still life,
landscape, and figure painting elements.3 credits each: 2 lecture
hours and 2 laboratory hours per week. Prerequisites: ARTS 110 for
ARTS 123, ARTS 123 for ARTS 124, or permission of program
coordinator
ARTS 127-128 3 Credits Portrait
and Figure Painting I and Portrait and Figure Painting II
Explores painting theories and practices with emphasis on the
development of a creative approach and individual style; provides
models for figure or portrait studies.3 credits each: 2 lecture
hours and 2 laboratory hours per week. Prerequisites: ARTS 120 for
ARTS 127; ARTS 127 for 128, or permission of program coordinator
ARTS 130 – 3 Credits
Introduction to Printmaking
Explores basic techniques in relief, intaglio and mono-printing,
stressing non-toxic processes. Prerequisite: ARTS 110
ARTS 140 3 Credits Sculpture I
Introduces 3-D Design concepts and the techniques of modeling,
casting, and carving; includes a variety of media in the
exploration of representative and non-objective works and provides
models for figure and portrait studies.3 credits: 2 lecture hours
and 2 laboratory hours per week
ARTS 141 3 Credits Sculpture II
Provides further development of the principles and techniques of
sculpture through the use of a variety of materials; constructions
using welding, woodworking, and other methods will be explored. 3
credits: 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week.
Prerequisite: Arts 140 or permission of program coordinator
ARTS 142 and 143 3 Credits
Intermediate Sculpture and Advanced Sculpture
Explores advanced theories and practices related to additive and
subtractive sculpture approaches in the round and in relief;
provides models for figure and portrait studies. 3 credits each: 2
lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week. Prerequisite: ARTS
141, ARTS 142 for 143, or permission of program coordinator
ARTS 150 3 credits Ceramics I
Explores ceramic materials and processes emphasizing development
of hand building techniques and an introduction to the potter’s
wheel; provides basic understanding of clay, glazes, and kiln
operation. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per
week.
ARTS 151 3 credits Ceramics II
Develops hand-building techniques; emphasizes perfecting of skills
of throwing on the wheel, glazing and other surface enhancement
techniques. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per
week Prerequisite: ARTS 150 or permission of program coordinator
ARTS 152 and 153 3 credits
Intermediate Ceramics and Advanced Ceramics
Investigates advanced theories and practices in ceramics and
expands skills including throwing on the potter’s wheel, hand
building, formulating glazes and experimenting with various clay
bodies; encourages development of personal style through forms and
surface enhancement. 3 credits: 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory
hours per week. Prerequisite: ARTS 151 for 152, ARTS 152 for 153,
or permission of the program coordinator
ARTS 160 3 credits Fundamentals of
Photography
Introduces contemporary black and white still photography;
emphasizes basic camera skills and darkroom techniques as
foundation necessary for advanced study in photography. Student
supply list will be given at the first meeting of the class.
Prerequisite: Students must have a working 35mm camera with manual
functions and the option to interchange lenses. Lab Fee: $20.00
ARTS 161 3 credits Intermediate
Photography
Provides a lecture/darkroom course that examines advanced camera
and darkroom; serves as a continuation of Photography I.
Prerequisite: ARTS 160 or consent of the instructor.
ARTS 163 - 3 credits Color Photography
Explores fundamentals of color photographic printing as applied in
creative uses of color negative film; includes lectures,
demonstrations and critiques to develop technical proficiency and
an aesthetic awareness. Prerequisite: ARTS 162 or consent of the
instructor. Lab fee: $20.00
ARTS 191,192,193 Special Topics in Art
Explores special topics in art to take advantage of specific
interests in the studio arts and art history.
ARTS 291-293 – 1-3 Credits
Independent Study in Art
A faculty-mentored, independent course of study in which the
students, with the consent of the instructor, may elect to do
independent research and projects in the Arts.
