Computer Graphics and Visual Communications
CGVC 101 – 3 Credits Introduction
to Computer Graphics
Introduces fundamental software used in computer graphic design
including the user interface and operating system, navigation,
file organization, use of a file server, and scanner; emphasizes
basic design skills while learning design software,
experimentation and creative solutions to design problems. 3
lecture hours per week. Credit for equivalent experience is
available. Students seeking credit must present a portfolio
demonstrating a knowledge comparable to CGVC 101 course
objectives. Prerequisite: (RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 or LVR 2)
CGVC 102 – 3 Credits Design Basics
Introduces elements and principles of design as applied to visual
communication; covers career information and the history of the
field, as well as the traditional graphic design tools and
materials. 3 lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: (RDNG 052 or
ESOL 054 or LVR 2)
CGVC 108 – 3 Credits Designing with
Type
Explores concepts involved in producing successful typographic
design; topics include history, 20th century typographers,
anatomy, classification, measurement systems, legibility and
readability, typographic meaning, grid systems, typographic
hierarchy, spacing and alignment, type specification and
proofreading, and typography as it functions in the various media.
3 lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC 101 (conc.) and CGVC
102 or CGVC 106 or permission of program coordinator
CGVC 120 – 3 Credits Digital
Imaging I
Teaches the skills required for creating, manipulating, and
publishing digital images for both print and interactive media;
includes exposure to software such as Adobe Photoshop®, and
vector/draw programs, such as Adobe Illustrator® to develop
technical and creative processes. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory
hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC 101 or CVCP 101 and CGVC 102 or
CVCP 106 or permission of program coordinator
CGVC 121 – 3 Credits Computer
Illustration
Teaches development of vector-based illustrations using Adobe
Illustrator® postscript drawing program; includes creation of
images for print and screen publication ranging from simple
vignettes to complex spatial compositions with conceptual themes
and letterforms. 3 lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC 101
and CGVC 102 or permission of program coordinator
CGVC 123 – 3 Credits Design and
Layout I
Focuses on layout design using the principles of contrast,
alignment, repetition and proximity; includes creative concepts,
type specification, grid construction, color separation, history
of layout design, copyright issues, and working with printers. 2
lecture hours and 2 l aboratory hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC
101 and CGVC 102 or permission of program coordinator
CGVC/MULT 167 – 3 Credits
Introduction to Web Publishing
Explores application software, tools, and skills required to
create and publish interactive sites on the World Wide Web;
includes hypertext markup language, image preparation, site
organization and effective interface design using a variety of
authoring software packages with emphasis on creativity and
effective visual design. 2 lecture hours, 2 laboratory hours per
week. Prerequisite: CGVC 120 or MULT 121 or permission of program
coordinator
CGVC 202 – 3 Credits Design and
Layout II
Continues skills learned in CGVC 123 and introduces advanced
layout techniques using software such as QuarkXPress®; explores
current trends in graphic design and examines presentation
software used to produce informative screen presentations on
contemporary designers. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per
week. Prerequisite: CGVC 123 or permission of program coordinator
CGVC 205 – 3 Credits Business
Graphics
Teaches students to plan, design and produce all of the business
graphics typically used by businesses today; discusses methods
used to craft a visual message and identity, deliver brand and
image consistently across print and electronic formats, and
leverage their design investment across multiple marketing
activities. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week.
Prerequisite: CGVC 120 and CGVC 121 or permission of program
coordinator
CGVC 207 – 3 Credits Digital
Imaging II
Builds upon the skills learned in CGVC 120 and introduces advanced
image manipulation and editing techniques; discusses use of
complex channel and layer operations, image compositing using
raster and vector based electronic formats, and special
effects/plug-in software with emphasis on image editing and design
techniques that are required knowledge for professional
photographers and designers. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory
hours per week Prerequisite: CGVC 120 or CVCP 206 or permission of
program coordinator.
CGVC 236 – 3 Credits Typography and
Publication Composition
Discusses sensitive and appropriate use of typography in graphic
design and publication; reveals classical as well as contemporary
type styles and their applications in various publication formats
with emphasis on quality, creativity and modern digital production
techniques, including text mark-up languages. 2 lecture hours per
week, 2 lab hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC 108 and CGVC 123 or
permission of instructor. This course may not be offered in all

CGVC 246 – 3 Credits Graphic Design
for Communication
Explores the principles of design and challenges students to
produce strong and creative solutions for promoting a variety of
products and services; teaches design for both print and
interactive media delivery in a series of assignments that
emphasize building brand recognition and corporate identity. 2
lecture hours per week, 2 laboratory hours per week required.
Prerequisite: CGVC 202 or permission of program coordinator. This

CGVC 247 – 3 Credits Intermediate
Web Publishing
Builds upon the skills learned in CGVC 167 and introduces advanced
Web authoring and design techniques with emphasis on planning,
design, and concepts required for creating a site targeted to a
specific audience; topics include designing visual navigation
systems, using style sheets, implementing forms, using layers for
creative visual effects, animation, JavaScript interactivity and
embedding streaming audio/video media. 2 lecture hours and 2
laboratory hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC 167 or permission of

CGVC 248 – 3 Credits
Digital Prepress
Demonstrates flexibility and control that recent technological
changes in computer hardware and software have given to designers
and other graphics professionals; explains relevant pre-press and
printing processes and issues. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory
hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC 202 or permission of program

CGVC 251 – 3 Credits
Interactive Design I
Teaches creation of integrated, interactive presentations for CD
ROM and the Web with emphasis on clear and effective visual
communication of ideas; topics include effective visual and
conceptual design, image capture and editing, basic animation,
sound capture and editing, and creating interactive media. 2
lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week. Prerequisite: CGVC
120 or permission of program coordinator
CGVC 252 – 3 Credits
Interactive Design II
Builds upon skills learned in CGVC 251 and introduces advanced
multimedia and interactive design techniques using scripting
languages such as Action Script; emphasizes organization, work
flow, creativity, and effective visual design for screen-based
display. 2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours per week.
Prerequisite: CGVC 251 or permission of program coordinator. This

CGVC 254 – 3 Credits Portfolio
Workshop
Explores the dynamics involved in the preparation of a
professional and competitive portfolio for employment interviewing
purposes; emphasizes revision, discussion, and analysis of student
work under consideration for portfolio inclusion. Preparation for
the interviewing process includes production of an appropriate
résumé, a review of methods used for contacting potential
employers, and a rehearsal of the interview/presentation process.
This course should be taken during final semester. 2 lecture hours
per week, 2 laboratory hours per week required. Prerequisite: CGVC
