Transfer Pattern Description:
Health care is the fastest growing market in the computer field. With
the federal mandate to implement the electronic health record (EHR) and
the paradigm shift in industry to health informatics, the Health
Information Management (HIM) field is rapidly evolving from paper-based
medical records management to an increasingly electronic environment. To
accommodate this migration to an e-HIM workplace, skill sets for HIM
professionals are expanding to include a wide range of technical
expertise in specialized areas, including relational database
management, data communications, programming, and systems analysis.
The Health Informatics and Information Technology degree is an
administrative, applied technology degree for students interested in a
non-clinical care profession in the health care industry. Major program
outcomes are listed below. A more detailed outline of the knowledge,
skills, and abilities an HIIT graduate will possess can be found by

Upon completion of the HIIT program, graduates will be able to:

interpret and analyze data in a patient record in order to manually
and electronically code and classify records for reimbursement;

2. differentiate the roles of various health care delivery systems;

3. implement legal and regulatory requirements related to health
information;

4. perform data quality reviews to ensure accurate reimbursement;

5. analyze clinical and administrative data to identify trends that
demonstrate quality, safety, and effectiveness in health care delivery;

6. use technology to ensure accurate and confidential reporting of
information;
-
7. apply policies and procedures to the use of networks to facilitate
the electronic health record;

8. apply knowledge of database architecture and design; and
-
9. participate in the planning, design, selection, and implementation
of organization-wide information systems.
Students who complete this degree will find employment in hospitals and
other health care facilities, insurance companies, government agencies,
technology companies, and consulting firms as health information
technicians, clinical documentation specialists, compliance managers,
quality assurance officers, medical informatics managers, charge
description manager, case mix analyst, and health data analysts. New
roles may include job titles such as EHR system manager, IT training
specialist, and workflow and data analyst.
CCBC is currently in Candidacy Status with the Commission on
Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM)
and will seek formal accreditation. Upon accreditation, students who
successfully complete this degree will be eligible to take the American
Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) certification exam to
earn the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential. The
HIIT associate degree provides an academic path to a Bachelor of Science
degree in Health Information Administration, Health Information
Management, or Health Information Systems.
Prerequisite: Students must be eligible for General Education English
and Math classes to enter the program.
