PLEASE NOTE: If you are new to college and completed one or more credit courses successfully at CCBC in the fall 2009 semester, you are ENCOURAGED but NOT REQUIRED to take ACDV 101 in the spring 2010 semester.

Program Description:

Health care is the fastest growing market in the computer field. With the federal mandate to implement the electronic health record (EHR) and the paradigm shift in industry to health informatics, the Health Information Management (HIM) field is rapidly evolving from paper-based medical records management to an increasingly electronic environment. To accommodate this migration, skill sets for HIM professionals are expanding to include a wide range of technical expertise in specialized areas, including relational database management, data communications, programming, and systems analysis.

The Health Informatics and Information Technology A.A.S. degree is an administrative, applied technology degree for students interested in a non-clinical care profession in the health care industry. The following major program outcomes for the HIIT degree describe what graduates from the program will be able to do. Program outcomes are comprehensive and attend to major learning events in the degree. A more detailed outline of the knowledge, skills, and abilities an HIIT graduate will possess can be found by visiting the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): http://library.ahima.org/xpedio/groups/public/documents/ahima/bok1_025524.pdf.

Students who successfully complete the HIIT dgree will be able to:

  1. Analyze health records, policies and procedures, and employee performance for compliance with legal and regulatory requirements;
  2. Interpret health data and identify trends that will improve overall quality, safety, and effectiveness in the health care institution and will contribute to increased continuity of patient care;
  3. Perform data quality reviews to validate code assignment and compliance with reporting requirements;
  4. Contribute to organizational work plans, policies, procedures, quality management, and resource requisitions;
  5. Incorporate technology to facilitate workplace transition to an e-HIM environment; and
  6. Utilize databases and spreadsheets to consolidate, manipulate, integrate, and display health data.

Students who complete this degree will find employment in hospitals and other health care facilities, insurance companies, government agencies, technology companies, and consulting firms as health information technicians, clinical documentation specialists, compliance managers, quality assurance officers, medical informatics managers, charge description manager, case mix analyst, and health data analysts. New roles may include job titles such as EHR system manager, IT training specialist, and workflow and data analyst.

The HIIT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), 233 Michigan Avenue, Suite 2150, Chicago, IL 60601, 312-233-1183 in cooperation with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Students who successfully complete this degree are eligible to take the AHIMA certification exam to earn the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential. The HIIT associate degree provides an academic path to a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Administration, Health Information Management, or Health Information Systems.

Prerequisite: Students must be eligible for General Education English and Math classes to enter the program.
