CONSTRUCTION PRE-APPRENTICESHIP SERIES
CORE CONTINUING EDUCATION CERTIFICATE

Prepare for an apprenticeship or other entry-level positions in construction and related fields. In the Core, students learn safety, construction math, blueprint reading, tool usage, and other trade skills used in a wide variety of construction jobs. The Core includes 150 hours of training, leading to a “Construction Pre-Apprenticeship, Core” Continuing Education Certificate and several industry certifications: First Aid/CPR; OSHA 10 for Construction; Baltimore Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO; and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

The Core consists of the following classes:

CON 317, Construction Skills II
Total Cost: $1,399 (Tuition: $360 Fees: $1039)

CON 315
Construction Safety

Learn about construction safety in this Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) authorized training. You will receive a certificate upon successful completion. Topics include an introduction to OSHA, electrical safety, fall protection, personal protective equipment, ladder and stairway safety, material handling, hand and power tool safety, crane safety, and excavation safety.
Total Cost: $250 (Tuition: $100 Fees: $150)

Construction Skills I

Gain an overview of different construction trades and trade-related occupations. Become familiar with the green industry using green construction processes. Learn to use hand and power tools safely. Develop skills to get and keep a job, including conflict resolution, time management, and problem solving. Examine the heritage of the American worker, and discuss current employment and labor laws.

Construction Skills II

Learn the fundamentals of how to read and understand construction blueprints. Develop skills in applying a variety of math concepts used in the construction industry including measurements, fractions, conversions, metric system and construction. Become familiar with how to recognize drawings in development stage; organize drawings; and read site plans, architectural and mechanical/electrical drawings.

First Aid, CPR, and AED

Learn basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid techniques in order to become certified by the American Red Cross (ARC).

Students taking Basic Carpentry, Basic Electricity and Basic Plumbing are introduced to green trade standards.

Gain an introduction to basic carpentry terminology, using hand tools, power tools and building materials used in carpentry. Learn techniques that enable you to handle small projects that involve repair, maintenance and/or new construction. Topics include terminology, tools and materials, measuring, cutting lumber, windows and doors, and erecting walls.

Prepare for the Master's Electrician's test. This course is designed to prepare electricians for their Master's license. Topics to be covered include Ohms Law, conductor sizing, grounding and building service calculations.
