Learn hand-building techniques and wheel throwing instruction including types and uses of clay, pinch pot and their use in creating sculptural forms, coiling, slab construction includes an introduction to wheel techniques, decorating, glazing, and intaglio, ending in a class project. Build on skills learned in introductory clay classes with this 12 session, in-depth exploration of handbuilding and wheel throwing skills using both high and low-fire clays. Basic wheel and handbuilding techniques are reviewed, and more complex construction and glazing techniques are developed.

Collaborative Creative Play

Engage in play with your young child using objects that roll, stack, bend, expand and shrink-discovering each other's skills to imagine and create. We will use The Imagination Playground, 105-large block set, and some accessories (e.g., fabric, hoops & sand) to stimulate creative thinking, active movement and build structures. This play session is devoted to collaborative play between parent or guardian and child. Get ready to design, construct and display your innovation. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Make your drawings into illustrations by learning the art of visual storytelling. Use traditional and digital drawing techniques to create an illustrated story. Paint landscapes in Baltimore County "en plein air," or in the open air. Discuss the history of plein air painting; plein air materials; effective composition; color mixing, relationships, and effects; balance and coherence; the limitations and opportunities of alla prima painting; the pursuit of a personal vision; and the presentation of your work. This will take place mostly outdoors and offsite locations in Baltimore County, weather permitting.

Painting with Wax: Encaustic Painting

Using heated wax and pigment worked together, create a painting that has texture and dimension. Created by the ancient Greeks, encaustic painting (to burn in) is one of the oldest of painting techniques.
