DRB 027 – The Evolution of Theatre: US and Abroad

This course is designed to enable the student to research and learn about the evolution of the theatre in the US and abroad. Topics to be covered include American theatre from the 30s to the 60s; current American theatre; non-American playwrights; the American musical; discussion of the works of Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Edward Albee, August Wilson, Terrence McNally, Wendy Wasserstein, John Osbourne, David Hare, Simon Gray, Yasmina Reza, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Stephen Sondheim.

Course Objectives:
1. discuss the evolution of the careers of American playwrights,
2. identify important contemporary American playwrights,
3. identify at least three non-American playwrights who have made major contributions to American and world theatre, and
4. differentiate between the autobiographical musical from the dance musical and songs in a musical from an opera-operetta musical.
