Course Objectives:

PDE 547 – Career Management Series

Course Objectives:
1. Set realistic career and personal goals.
2. Use communication skills effectively.
3. Identify personal qualities critical to career growth.
4. Use job-seeking skills to obtain employment.

PDE 655 – Speaking In Public

Develop communication skills useful in interpersonal, work-related, volunteer and community leadership roles. Learn to make powerful presentations with confidence, poise and enthusiasm.

Course Objectives:
1. Present ideas effectively when speaking.
2. Develop confidence, poise and enthusiasm.
3. Project one's voice to reach the audience.
4. Develop an outline for a speech.
5. Organize a speech.

PDE 747 – Improve Your Memory

Learn the principles of memory improvement and techniques to improve long and short term memory. Topics include memory exercises, long and short term memory, memory principles, learning styles, steps for memory retention and techniques for improving memory.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate an understanding of long term and short term memory,
2. demonstrate an understanding of two memory principles,
3. define three learning styles,
4. explain encoding storage and retrieval, and
5. demonstrate techniques for improving memory.

PDE 859 – Special Events Planning - Making Them Work

Learn the tricks of the trade for planning successful special events. Attention given to pre-planning, organization, working with vendors and committee members and themes.

Course Objectives:
1. list and discuss the elements involved in the pre-planning stage of a special event,
2. identify and discuss organizational issues to be considered in making an event run smoothly,
3. identify and discuss techniques and skills that would be helpful in working with vendors,
4. identify and discuss techniques and skills needed to insure committee members will work together to produce a successful special event, and
5. develop a plan for a special event from the start to finish including a theme.

PDE 874 – Expand Your Memory

This course is designed to introduce the student to easy and pleasant techniques for exercising the brain. The course covers techniques based on the recognized practice of Keith Trudeau. Topics include: explanation of techniques, practice and participation/individually and in groups, and how to practice anytime and anywhere.

Course Objectives:
1. Apply and practice the learned techniques.
2. Describe the importance of brain activity as a means of continuing sound mental health.
3. Implement memory techniques to be able to enjoy life to the fullest.

PDE 876 – Shaking The Money Tree: How To Write a Great Proposal

This course is designed to provide the student with the basic principles and practices for successfully developing and writing a grant proposal. Topics include: grant ideas, sources of funding, types of grants, budget practices, grant writing, and grant administration.

Course Objectives:
1. Discuss how grant ideas are formed and sources to fund the idea.
2. Describe types of grants.
3. Discuss budgeting and writing practices.
4. Discuss the administrative practices.

PDE 888 – SAY YES TO SUCCESS-PART I

Course Objectives:
1. set long and short term goals;
2. identify current spending patterns;
3. develop a workable family budget;
4. identify past job successes;
5. understand the seven phases of an interview;
6. answer interview questions with concrete examples of past successes;
7. write a cover letter that is customized to answer a newspaper ad;
8. complete a job application accurately;
9. identify positive communication techniques for use on the job, and
10. develop personal time management strategies.

PDE 889 – SAY YES TO SUCCESS-PART II

Course Objectives:
1. develop an action plan to reach stated goals;
2. evaluate and modify the budget developed in Say Yes To Success ¿ Part I
3. use positive communication techniques on the job;
4. manage anger more effectively;
5. give concrete positive feedback to family to improve communication;
6. evaluate and modify time management techniques developed in Say Yes To Success ¿ Part I;
7. use techniques to manage stress;
8. understanding the basics of healthy nutrition, and
9. develop a time management plan.

PDE 890 – SAY YES TO SUCCESS-PART III

Course Objectives:
1. use time management techniques in family situations;
2. identify and communicate strengths to family members;
3. plan nutritious menus for the family;
4. brainstorm potential solutions to obstacles;
5. evaluate potential solutions to identify the most effective solutions;
6. use additional techniques to manage stress;
7. make cold calls to employers to inquire about job vacancies;
8. use positive communication techniques on the job, and
9. use conflict management techniques on the job.

PDE 903 – Secrets of Better Photography

Learn the basic technology that all cameras use, and receive helpful information on exposure and lighting. Explore strategies for taking excellent photos in all types of situations, including portraiture, landscape, macro and still life.

Course Objectives:
1. discuss the different types of cameras and lenses used in photography,
2. demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between light and photography,
3. demonstrate an understanding of the techniques used for outdoor and travel photography, and
4. demonstrate an understanding of the unique needs of the photojournalism industry.

PDE 910 – Solving Classroom Discipline Problems

This course is designed to enable the student who is a trainer to learn the step-by-step approach to effective, positive discipline in the classroom. Topics to be covered include strategies, authority, instructional methods, instructional material and boundaries.

Course Objectives:
1. explain the connection between basic needs and discipline;
2. develop learning strategies that work effectively; and
3. explain strategies for dealing with students who defy authority, are disrespectful, and/or disruptive.

PDE 916 – Get Assertive

This course is designed to enable the student to learn how to become more assertive in the workplace and in personal encounters. Topics to be covered include anger, criticism, body image, and social situations.

Course Objectives:
1. explain the difference between passive, aggressive, and assertive attitudes, gestures, and phrases;
2. demonstrate an understanding of how to be verbally assertive using direct, honest statements, framing assertive messages with four forms of ¿I¿ statements, and dealing with anger and criticism from others;
3. identify ways to adapt the assertive message according to the personality type and resistance offered by the other person; and
4. explain the different emotional types of individuals and how each deals with other people and conflicts, how these different emotional types behave in relationships, and how to properly deal with conflict assertively.

PDE 955 – Understanding Adolescents

This course will teach students the very basics of how to gain a deep understanding and appreciation of adolescent's development and behavior. Uncover the secrets of the adolescent mind and gain valuable information on how they think, how they feel, how their identities develop, and what steps to take to ensure that you are well prepared to meet the needs of the teens in your life. Topics include physical, emotional, and cognitive changes, stress, including common defense mechanisms, coping techniques, and common mental health issues.

PDE 956 – Get Funny

The course is designed to instruct students how to develop the skill of creating humor. Topics in include jokes, witticisms, comedy writeres, speeches and presentations so that web pages, entertainment, and marketing.

Course Objectives:
1. explain the relationship of ancient cultures and comedy,
2. develop the techniques for making observational humor,
3. develop the ability to construct a joke,
4. describe how to use absurdity and exaggeration,
5. provide a brief overview of pop culture and its role in comedy,
6. describe the rules of performing improvisation, and
7. provide an overview of the many markets open to comedy writers.

PDE 962 – PET PHOTOGRAPHY

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate several techniques and angles for posing with animal sounds,
2. demonstrate the ability to introduce props into the photograph, and
3. complete a successful pet portrait.

PDE 980 – English Pronunciation for Foreign Speakers 2

Advanced-level non-native English speakers will learn to use techniques in order to be better understood when speaking English. These will include the International Phonetic Alphabet, vowel and consonant sounds, stress, and intonation.

Course Objectives:
1. improve clarity pronouncing chunks---words that often go together and link words to each other;
2. learn exercises for the tongue, lips, jaw, facial muscles, and soft palate to strengthen articulators;
3. apply the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to improve pronunciation of word and phrases;
4. show improved clarity on the stress of multi-syllabic words;
5. phrase words into thought groups and pause between the phrases;
6. apply learned pronunciation rules to improve rhythm and intonation in speech; and
7. use the appropriate degree of formality when participating in academic, social, and workplace interactions.

PDE 982 – A NEW APPROACH TO JOB HUNTING

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate an understanding of work as "skill" placement, not job placement;
2. demonstrate an understanding of conducting networking in available areas for hiring;
3. assess one¿s skills; and
4. develop a systematic approach to job/career hunting.

PDE 983 – CAREER/PERSONAL GROWTH

Course Objectives:
1. set realistic career and personal goals,
2. discuss the importance of showing empathy toward others, and
3. identify personal qualities that are critical to career growth.

PDE 992 – Team Building

Build cooperation and collaboration. Learn to effectively use communication skills in group projects and develop the skills necessary to contribute to a supportive and positive team atmosphere.

Course Objectives:
1. identify the qualities of good team members;
2. complete a team project;
3. assess, record and reflect on teamwork qualities while working on a project; and
4. identify similarities and differences among team members and respect diversity.

PDE 999 – Individual Excellence: Secrets of Career Success

This course is designed to develop career skills by focusing on several key areas of personal development, including goal setting, time management, and personal organization, and creativity.

Course Objectives:
1. create personal goals that can be measured and achieved,
2. apply techniques for effective oral and written communications,
3. list effective time management strategies,
4. discuss several keys to personal organization, and
5. apply creative problem-solving techniques.
