SSP 033 – Enhanced Instructor Training

This course provides the techniques and method of instruction for trainers who instruct police and correctional personnel.

Course Objectives:
1. define and demonstrate the Trainer¿s role;
2. identify and illustrate the components of the process of adult learning and the process of training that changes attitudes and behaviors;
3. discuss and perform public speaking and group leadership skills;
4. classify and apply training principles, practices, and techniques;
5. analyze the role that training plays or can play in organizations;
6. explain the principles of motivation which apply in the learning-training process;
7. define the basic principles of analyzing the behavior of trainees which must be changed or maintained by a training program;
8. demonstrate that the practice of careful advanced planning must take into consideration contingencies which may affect the actual delivery of training; and
9. demonstrate the ability to effectively deliver training.

SSP 037 – COLLSN INVESTGTN PTRL OFFICER

Course Objectives:
1. list necessary steps to ensure that a proper investigation is conducted;
2. review protocol for scene identification, and
3. utilize witness interview techniques.

SSP 045 – BSC RADAR OPERATIONS TRAINING

Course Objectives:
1. discuss operational and legal considerations pertaining to the use of RADAR;
2. review health issue relating to RADAR use;
3. list speed offenses and enforcement, and
4. identify basic principles of RADAR speed measurement.

SSP 047 – COURT PREPARATIN & TESTIMONY

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate appropriate court demeanor;
2. review report preparation criteria, and
3. discuss traffic and criminal court proceedings.

SSP 048 – FIELD TRNG OFFICER CERTFTN CRS

Course Objectives:
1. evaluate a training problem;
2. identify appropriate teaching strategies;
3. identify and describe learning styles;
4. demonstrate effective communication skills, and
5. establish criteria for mentoring.

SSP 051 – Maryland Police And Corrections Training Commission Instructor

This course will provide provisional instructor certification for those who successfully complete all aspects of the training. Certification received from this training is valid for "General Instructor" only, and does not certify the recipient in firearms or other specialized instruction.

Course Objectives:
1. submit a one-hour work related original lesson plan within thirty days of completion of the course;
2. review principles/practices of adult education;
3. recognize varied learning styles and develop lesson plans accordingly;
4. develop visual aids to reinforce instruction;
5. evaluate and monitor student learning, and
6. update instructional materials as necessary.

SSP 072 – CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TRNG I

Course Objectives:
1. identify the importance of, and the tasks involved in processing an inmate for admission to a correctional facility;
2. identify and explain the nature of treatment programs and the process of classification which exists on both the state and local levels to include special needs of female offenders;
3. identify the roles that all correctional employees have in providing custody, security, and treatment functions, including discussion of the custody, security, and treatment roles of teachers, nurses, counselors, dietary officers, and officers/employees of different sexes and races;
4. describe the need for the correctional officer/employee to function as a counselor;
5. describe the basic techniques that correctional employees can use to counsel inmates effectively, and
6. describe the relationship between morale and discipline.

SSP 073 – CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS TRNG II

Course Objectives:
1. discuss how to mediate disputes among inmates;
2. determine how and when to counsel inmates about non-emergency personal problems;
3. analyze situations to reduce bitterness and unrest among inmates;
4. define what actions can be taken by correctional officers against inmates;
5. demonstrate how to write a proper and complete incident report;
6. recognize the provisions of Maryland law and how to interpret and administer them, and
7. demonstrate proper handcuffing techniques when moving inmates.

SSP 110 – OFFICER TRAINING: ENTRANCE LEV

Course Objectives:
1. review rules and regulations specific to the academy;
2. demonstrate knowledge proficiency in firearms theory and holster usage;
3. discuss procedures for the use of a firearm for force;
4. demonstrate proficiency in academic achievement, weapon usage, and emergency vehicle operations; and
5. maintain recommended overall physical fitness specific procedures.

SSP 111 – OFFICER TRAINING: LATERAL ENTR

Course Objectives:
1. describe appropriate procedures for stop sticks, traffic stops, and high risk stops;
2. explain rules of search and seizure;
3. conduct roadside interview for a consent search;
4. define sexual harassment/racial discrimination policy guidelines, and
5. demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of agency specific procedures.

SSP 117 – STANDARD FIELD SOBRIET TESTING

Course Objectives:
1. understand the legal environment and the use of three Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST);
2. utilize Horizontal Gaze nystagmus, Walk and Turn, One-leg Stand, and Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) instruments; and
3. demonstrate the appropriate administrative procedures for administering the three SFSTs.

SSP 123 – Officer Training: Review of Basics

Course Objectives:
1. list the elements to be considered at a crime scene;
2. demonstrate an understanding of criminal liability in Drinking Under the Influence (DUI), and collision crimes;
3. develop the ability to identify patrol procedures utilized at airports; and
4. demonstrate facility familiarization regarding airports, port, tunnels, highways, and bridges under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
