Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education Defined

Cooperative Education is an educational program in a learning-centered environment that integrates classroom learning with real world experiences related to students' programs of study. Students enter into partnerships with employers and faculty that foster learning and focus on the development and achievement of personal and professional skills needed for the twenty-first century. Students may earn both college credits and pay for the work-learning experiences.

Requirements for Participation

To be eligible for Cooperative Education, students must have acquired a minimum of 12 credits toward a degree program, a 2.5 QPA in their majors, and an overall QPA of 2.0. Additional prerequisites may vary according to students' programs of study. Prerequisite requirements may be waived for students who apply for Co-op under the high school Co-op articulation guidelines or have previous work experience related to their programs of study.

Benefits to Students

  • Assists students in clarifying and achieving career goals

  • Bridges the gap between theory and real-world application with an emphasis on learning outcomes assessment

  • Enables students to develop and achieve personal and professional skills needed for the twenty-first century

  • Provides opportunities to enhance resumes and strengthen job search skills

  • Builds a network of contacts for employment after graduation

Program Highlights

Through The Community College of Baltimore County/Baltimore County Public Schools Articulation Agreement, students may be eligible for CCBC Co-op credits for their high school work experiences.

Students' current work sites may qualify as Co-op work experiences based on the direct link between the students' programs of study or career goals, and the nature and academic rigor of the job responsibilities.

The vast majority of Co-op experiences lead to full-time, permanent employment.
