SUPPORT FOR THE CAMPUS: FUNDING FOR NEW SIGN LANGUAGE LAB.
The Baltimore-Washington area has the highest concentration of deaf
people in the nation. In addition, new legislation is requiring schools
and businesses to provide communication accessibility for the deaf.
These factors have generated a huge demand in our region for more people
with sign language interpreting skills.
|
To meet that need, Catonsville created the first and only
statewide Interpreting Program. Students have the option to earn
either a certificate or a degree qualifying them for entry-level
positions in this rapidly expanding field. And now they have the
benefit of learning in a new high-tech interpreter lab made
possible through a $100,000 fund-raising campaign launched by the
Foundation.

The lab includes ten interactive student stations with a computer-driven
instructor console. The stations have videotaping and audiotaping
capabilities, allowing students to play back their work, and check their
progress with their instructor. Graduates will be able to use their
much-needed skills in a variety of areas including churches, educational
and medical institutions, and community social programs.
