ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR LEARNING (APL)
The Labor Studies Program offers union activists a chance to gain college
credits for work that they have finished in their unions. In order to qualify,
a student simply takes an introductory course at the Dundalk Campus with Fran
Smither, Director of Experiential Learning, to learn how to assemble a portfolio,
which is basically a large notebook.
The course material is supervised by Bill Barry, the Director of Labor Studies,
and can be done with no time limit—that is, you can take as long as you
need to finish the project, which is similar to an independent study except
you are producing a portfolio about work you have already done—hence the
term “prior learning.” Get it?
If not, check with us for more information.
One important aspect of these courses is that you pay only ½ of the normal
tuition, so you can get three credits for $ 90.00.
Under the guidelines of the CCBC, you can get a total of 15 credits through
the APL method, and can take the courses at any time—at the beginning
of your work, in the middle, or to wrap up a degree.
