The Music Department at CCBC Essex
Applied Music
Information
Weekly Applied Lessons
You are expected to practice each week for your lesson. If you do not
practice regularly and intelligently, you will not progress on your
instrument. Your teacher will give you a letter grade each week
indicating your progress/achievement and effort.
Repertoire Class
In addition to your private lesson each week, you are required to attend
and participate in a repertoire class on a weekly basis. Each repertoire
class meets for one hour a week, allowing you weekly performance
opportunities. There is no additional cost to you for this class. Please
consult your applied teacher for the repertoire class scheduled in your
area.
Applied Music Performance Evaluation (Jury)
-
A performance evaluation, or jury, is required at the end of each
semester of all students who enroll in Applied Music for credit
(Levels 1-3). The jury exam schedule is posted on the glass-enclosed
music bulletin board outside Room H219 at least one week before the
last day of classes each semester. All applied music instructors are
also given a copy of the schedule.
-
Students who register for audit are not required to take a jury.
-
If you have a conflict with another exam, please contact the music
secretary and your applied music instructor immediately.
-
About two weeks before the end of the semester, your applied music
instructor will give you Applied Music Performance Evaluation forms to
complete (one for each member of the jury). Take these forms to the
jury. Each jury member makes comments on the form.
-
Your instructor will give the completed forms to the music secretary.
You may pick up the white copies from the Music Department secretary,
unless you arrange for your instructor to mail them to you. The yellow
copies will remain in your file in the Music Office.
Performance Requirements for the Jury
While juries vary
according to the performance medium, the following are general
guidelines:
-
Sufficient literature should be performed to demonstrate proficiency
-
Technique and sight reading skills should be demonstrated
-
Memorization should be demonstrated (when applicable).
-
Generally, two pieces are performed from a repertoire of several
pieces prepared throughout the semester for performance. For keyboard
and instrumental majors, you will choose the first piece to perform,
the jury will have second choice.
-
Your instructor will provide you with a syllabus outlining any
specific jury requirements.
Note Concerning Absences from Jury
If, due to a serious illness or another unforeseen emergency, you must
miss a jury examination, you must notify the Music Department secretary
or your applied music instructor before the scheduled jury. You must
make up the jury by the third week of the following semester.
Music Forum
-
Music Forum, the Music Department’s series of student, faculty, and
guest performances and lectures, meets every Friday from 12:20-1:15
p.m. (the free hour) in the Recital Hall. As a music major, your
attendance is required.
-
Attendance at Music Forum counts for 10% of your Applied Music grade.
-
You will be expected to perform on Music Forum periodically, upon
recommendation by your Applied Music instructor. All students are
required to write program notes for performance pieces.
