Components of the Internet:
  • World Wide Web - The web with its hypertext information, graphics, and interactivity is the part that most people are interested in using. The web provides a single interface in which you can access a variety of information in different formats. Most web pages use the hypertext protocol but most of the other protocols (e-mail, ftp, gopher, newsgroups, list serves, telnet, chat) are available on the world wide web.
  • Electronic Mail (E-Mail) - It allows you to send electronic messages to other Internet users both locally and world wide.
    • You need an e-mail address to send or receive electronic messages
    • An e-mail address is usually composed of part of a persons name than an @ (at)symbol and the server that sends or delivers the mail.

    • You can sign up for Free e-mail accounts at various web sites
  • News groups/discussion groups (Usenet)- They allow you to post and read articles on a wide variety of subjects. They are a global electronic bulletin boards in which millions of computer users exchange information on a wide range of topics. These topics could be either academic or recreational topics. They do not send messages to your e-mail address but the messages are stored in a central location.

  • Telnet - This allows you to connect to and use another Internet computer as if you were directly connected. It is a program that allows you to log into computers on the Internet and use online databases, library catalogs, chat services and more. It is often called "remote access" because you are connecting to a computer and its services. A link to a telnet program will look like any other link, but it will launch a Telnet session to make the connection.
