Travel MetaSearch Engines: Top

Side-Step Finds the best airfare or hotels rate by going to different travel sites like Expedia, Orbitz and clustering the results. It is good metasearch tool for comprehensive one-stop shopping. It often makes travel much less expensive.

FareChase, from Yahoo is a good metasearch service which is currently in beta testing.

Cheapflights, Kayak, Mobissimo and OneTravel are some other good travel metasearch engines. Some are typically limited to a geographic market or ticket type or charge too high a fee.

AOW: Airlines of the Web Site allows consumers to shop on more than 500 airlines worldwide. Click on cyberfares to get the latest hot deals, or check out air tips to get the most out of your travel.

Microsoft Expedia easy-to-use sections include: Travel Agent, Maps, Resources, Currency Converter, Weather Info; and Communicate, where travelers exchange information.

Orbitz You can use the Orbitz Quick Flight to book a trip, check out flight deals, and locate a weekend Webfare. Web sites founded less than a year ago by five airlines: American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, and United.

Travelocity Travel resources on the net, includes information about packages, destinations, prices, and more.

Internet Travel Network Provides a public reservation system, for free Internet access to air, car and hotel information and reservations.

Accommodation Search Engine Search engine allows you to search for accommodations around the world. Limit your search by type of hotel or inn, price, facilities, and activities available or desirable.

Travel.State.gov The U.S. State Department offers information on visas, travel advisories and what to do in an emergency with list of English-speaking doctors in foreign cities.

CurrencySource lets you purchase foreign currency with your credit card 9 or debit card, so you have local bills in hand when you are in an unfamiliar destination.

GoAbroad.com A "comprehensive on-line source for study abroad, language schools, overseas internships, international volunteer positions, teach abroad, jobs abroad, US Universities, Eco-Travel around the world..." . A great one-stop place for people interested in working and traveling overseas.

Fodor's Travel Service Quality information on travel around the world. Includes articles on selected destinations to stay, dine, cruises, and sports and adventure travel. Offers hotel and restaurant indexes with reviews.

Travel Channel Information on destinations around the globe. Includes categories : Adventure, Animal Watching, Family Adventure, Great Cities, Mysterious Places, Unique Lodging, and more. Helpful tools: live cams and virtual tours; converters ...

Virtual Tourist Online Travel Research Exchange. Members from over 219 countries share experiences to help each other travel smarter. Includes: best place to get great airfares, accommodations, car rentals, and insider advice on a place you want to visit.

Foreign Languages for Travelers Translation of travel words and phrases, numbers, shopping and dining, directions, places, times and dates. The site also has sound files to help with pronunciation.

TimeOut.com Lots of information about the world's greatest cities. City guides divided into sections: Accommodation, Restaurants,, Eating and Drinking, Shopping, and City Web links with sightseeing, events, parks... (Does have Annoying pop ups.)

Tourism Offices Worldwide Directory Contact information (including web links) for over 1,000 "official government tourism offices, convention and visitors bureaus, chambers of commerce, and similar agencies which provide free, accurate, and unbiased travel information to the public. No travel agents, no tour operators, no hotels."

Travel on the Web From ACRL, April 2002 -Links to many travel sites. Includes guides, air, train bus travel, adventure travel, Bed & Breakfast, interhostel, home exchanges and more.

Weather Channel Click the Travel tab at top and than the vacation planner. Get a 10-day forecast so you know what kind of clothes to bring. Offers forecasts for cities worldwide as well as radar and satellite maps.

US State Department Travel Advisories Browse a collection of all the travel advisories from the US State Department.

CDC Travelers' Health Center for Disease Control's International Travelers' Health information sheets for the different areas of the world. Includes information about contagious diseases, vaccinations, safe food and water, traveling with children, and special needs travelers.

Backpackers Guide to the Internet Backpackers and budget travelers will find many links to helpful information such as what to pack, where to find your equipment , travel guides, backpackers online bulletin boards and more.

Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel Online "Vacations for Real People," this site features a daily newsletter, bargains, alternative vacation ideas, tips and resources, The Cheapest Places on Earth, and Arthur Frommer's answers to your travel questions.

Great Outdoor Recreation Pages (GORP) Large annotated directory of web sites for outdoor recreation and travel, including information on attractions, activities, locations, books and media and gear.

Hostelling International American Youth Hostels This is Hostelling International's American Youth Hostel Association (HI-YAH). Includes access to information and descriptions of hostels in cities across the U.S., and links to international associations belonging to the International Youth Hostel Federation.

Lonely Planet Online Contains travel information for regions, countries and cities worldwide; postcards from travelers around the world; traveler's health check and detours to the "lost and forgotten places of the world".

Rick Steve's' Europe Through the Back Door Tips for traveling Europe on a budget from this well-known TV travel guide. Covers tiny unknown towns well off the beaten tourist track as well as new angles to big cities. There is a country-by-country directory.
