Freundel and students nominated for Kennedy Center awards - again
Carl Freundel, assistant professor of Theatre and Speech, and four CCBC
student actors – Laura Clark, Christopher Kalman, Valerie Koel and Lilly
Hayes – were nominated for awards at the Region II Kennedy Center
American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) held at Muhlenberg College in
Allentown, Pa. in January. More than 200 colleges across the nation,
mostly four-year institutions, vie for this honor each year.
Freundel was nominated for the Mark David Cohen Playwriting Award for
his original work, Traghost, a disturbing and thought-provoking
exploration of abuse. This year’s nomination marks the third year that
Freundel has received this prestigious nomination. The four student
nominees, all actors in Traghost, competed for the national Irene
Ryan Acting Scholarship.
Last year, CCBC Theatre student Jason Roth took first place for acting
at the regionals and won a $500 scholarship as well as a trip to the
finals at the Kennedy Center for his work in The Other, another
Freundel original adaptation. Unfortunately, none of CCBC’s nominees
made this year’s finals. However, alumnus Roth, now a student at UMBC,
won this year’s regionals for acting and is headed for the nationals
again.
In addition to his nomination, Freundel was selected to conduct a
workshop, “Emotional Anatomy and the Actor’s Journey Through Vocal
Sequencing,” at this year’s KCACTF regional conference.
