Gayona Beckford-Barclay, director of academic support, CCBC
Essex, had her article “Fitting International Education into the
Community College Glove,” published in the Fall 2003 issue of
Trustee Quarterly, the official publication of the Association of
Community College Trustees. Her “point of view” piece, “Going for the
Globe,” appeared in the January 5, 2004 issue of Community
College Week.
Maureen McDonough, director of Teacher Education, also authored a
“point of view” article published by Community College
Week. McDonough’s column, “We Can Do More For Teacher Education,”
was featured in the newspaper’s Feb. 2 edition.
The Dec. 18 edition of The Jeffersonian highlighted the
work of Bill Barry, director of Labor Studies, for the historical
work he has done regarding Bethlehem Steel. Barry created an oral
history of Bethlehem Steel based on interviews with workers and retirees.
Community college tuition increases, including the increase at CCBC, was
the basis for a Jan. 11 Baltimore Sun story. The article also
contained quotes from CCBC student Donovan Lomax. Lomax, who is studying
art and computer animation, expressed that he’s trying to save up the
money to continue his studies before moving on to the Maryland Institute
of Art.
The Dec. 24 edition of the East County Times noted the
partnership that Continuing Education and Economic Development has
established with Royal Farm Stores. The partnership allows Royal Farms
to make CCBC information and course materials available at 32 of its
store locations in Baltimore County.
The Dec. 19 edition of the Baltimore Business Journal (BBJ
) ranked CCBC’s Nursing program as 10th among the largest health-related
professional schools in Maryland. That same edition of the BBJ
listed CCBC as fourth in regard to enrollment among all colleges and
universities in the Baltimore area, and sixth in regard to the largest
computer-training firms in the area.
The “Newsmakers” section of the Dec. 18 edition of the
Columbia Flyer featured Mary De Luca, CCBC senior director of
Public Relations, for her designation as “Communicator of the Year” by
the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations.
The Daily Record "Business Album" (Dec. 6) ran an article
and four captioned photos from the grand opening of the Practical
Nursing Skills Laboratory at CCBC Dundalk in October.
The Dundalk Eagle (Dec. 4) included a calendar item and a feature
article on LaVerne Miers-Bond and Katie Calkins, featured artists for
the “Body Works” exhibit held in the Gallery at CCBC Dundalk from
mid-November to mid-December. The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance
(GBCA) included it in their weekly news e-mails for the run of the
exhibit.
The Theatre at CCBC Essex production of Scrooge – The Musical
garnered two feature articles in The Eagle Flyer (Dec. 5 and Dec. 12).
“Justice Comes to Chesapeake High School,” a news feature on the School
of Justice in-service program at Chesapeake High, appeared in The
Avenue News (Dec. 17) and East County Times (Dec. 18).
The East County Times (Dec. 18), The Eagle Flyer (Dec. 19)
and the Baltimore Sun (Dec. 22) picked up the press release on
the nomination of Carl Freundel and four CCBC Essex students to
the regionals of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in
January.
The “Brain Power Supplement” to Patuxent Publishing Company newspapers
(Dec. 31) featured the new Music Production and Audio Technology program
to be offered at CCBC Essex and the Construction Law and Dispute
Resolution course to be offered at CCBC Dundalk this spring.
The East County Times (Dec. 31) announced the Senior Star
Showcase trip to Las Vegas as part of the Senior Theatre USA
Performance Festival in January. In the same edition, the paper carried
a feature and photo of the Early Childhood Learning Center’s Bike-A-Thon
for St Jude’s Hospital.
Bill Barry, director of Labor Studies, was a guest on The Larry
Young Show (WOLB 1010 A.M.) on Jan. 28 to discuss, among other topics,
the impact of Bush administration policies on American workers. Barry
also appeared on Maryland Public Television in November, and discussed
labor issues on “Day Break” on 88.9 WEAA FM radio.
The front page of the Jan. 22 edition of The Jeffersonian
featured a photo of Carla Crisp, information specialist/receptionist at
CCBC Dundalk, posing with a scale model of what will be a new “Dundalk
Gateway” sculpture. Crisp spearheaded the volunteer project to create a
graphic representation of the community’s pride and heritage. The
sculpture will be installed on the CSX railroad bridge that crosses
Dundalk Avenue at the city-county line.
The Nov. 19 edition of The Catonsville Times featured an article about
the CCBC Adjunct Faculty Job Fair held in November, and also published
an article about the CCBC Catonsville women’s soccer team
as they qualified for the NJCAA national championship in Arizona.
The Nov. 5 edition of he Catonsville Times acknowledged CCBC Dean
of the School of Applied and Information Technology Michael Netzer
and Toyota Technical Education Network Director Steve Ingham. Toyota
Motor Sales U.S.A. recently honored the two for their innovative
automotive technology training techniques.
An advertisement for the CCBC Women’s Expo was featured in
the premiere issue of On Purpose Woman, a local magazine focusing
on women’s issues.
