Guest Artist Jim Lucas brings King’s message to life
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious
racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of
interposition and nullification; one day right down in Alabama little
black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white
boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today!
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke these stirring words in his
now-famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Aug.
28, 1963. More than four decades later, King’s message will again come
to life through Keeper of the Dream, an evocative and inspiring
performance by guest artist Jim Lucas, 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 in the
Fine and Performing Arts Center Theatre (Q Building) at CCBC Catonsville.
Lucas’ renditions of King’s “I Have a Dream,” and “I’ve Been to the
Mountaintop” speeches, as well as excerpts from “A Knock at Midnight”
and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” have captivated audiences
nationwide. His resemblance to King and interpretation of the civil
rights leader’s message have been called “remarkable,” “awe-inspiring,”
“uncanny” and “soulful.” Lucas’ stage credits include co-starring in the
critically acclaimed play The Meeting, a powerful drama about the
lives, philosophies and times of King and Malcolm X.
The CCBC Catonsville Division of Learning and Student Development, Guest
Artist Committee, is sponsoring this performance of Keeper of the
Dream. Tickets are: $7 general admission, $5 for senior adults,
alumni association members and children, and $2 for CCBC students and
staff.
