CCBC Dundalk’s Dawud Drew leads nation in scoring
Dawud Drew, 22, CCBC Dundalk’s star basketball player, is the nation’s
leading scorer in NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association)
Division II basketball, averaging 32.3 points per game. He ranks second
in rebounding with 13.2 per game and is among the conference leaders
with assists at 6.5 per game.
According to Ed Torres, head coach for men’s Basketball at CCBC Dundalk,
“Dawud is a great student athlete as well as a great person. Even though
he is a superstar, he is a team player. He is being scouted by colleges
and universities in NCAA [National College Athletic Association]
Division I.”
Marc Ershler, associate director of CCBC athletics, echoed Torres’
praise, “Dawud’s scoring is phenomenal and surpasses not only players
from our conference, the MD JUCO [Maryland Junior College Athletic
Conference] and NJCAA, but also players from the NCAA Division I. More
than that, he has overcome major personal losses – including the deaths
of his parents – and has still kept on striving to improve his life. His
achievements in life surpass his achievements on the court.”
In 1995, Drew’s mother and stepfather died within six months of each
other, leaving eight children in the care of Dawud and an aunt. He was
the family’s second oldest child, and just 14 years old at the time.
Drew, his brother and two sisters moved in with his aunt. His other four
siblings were sent to South Carolina to live with family members.
Drew graduated from Lincoln High School in New Jersey at age 17, where
he attended while holding a job. He entered St. Peters College in the
fall of 1999 but withdrew after a few months due to the pressures of
work and family. In April 2002, Drew attended a basketball showcase
where a student athlete referred him to CCBC Dundalk. After a visit to
the campus, he signed with CCBC.
Drew is a Business Administration major with a 3.05 average at the end
of the Fall 2003 semester. He will be nominated for CCBC Dundalk’s Male
Athlete of the Year award and honored with the other student athletes
May 19 at a banquet at Martin’s North Point.
