Community Education Program Joins Wal-Mart in Literacy Initiative

The CCBC Adult and Family Learning Center will join Wal-Mart's National Literacy Initiative, a grassroots program launched in more than 3,300 Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Clubs and warehouse and transportation facilities across the country.

CCBC assists in this initiative by serving as the provider of literacy programs in the area. Potential students will call a toll-free number on Wal-Mart advertising displays and be connected to a call center. The call center will contact CCBC with the student information and the college will call the student within 48 hours.

"The Center for Adult and Family Literacy is very pleased to have been contacted by Wal-Mart and invited to participate in this community initiative," said Gayle Sweeney, director. "It is one more strategy to reach adults who are seeking assistance in improving their skills while still maintaining confidentiality for the learner."

As a major provider of literacy education in Baltimore County, CCBC's Community Education programs include Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and diploma programs such as the Adult External High School Diploma Program (EDP) and the General Education Development (GED) program.
