Dundalk Elementary School students travel to space, sail around the Bay and plant oak trees
as part of Environmental Leadership Program
CCBC partners with Honeywell and Living Classrooms to bring students
'Adventures in Environmental Leadership' summer program
Baltimore County, Md. – The Community College of Baltimore County has joined Honeywell Hometown Solutions and Living Classrooms to expand Honeywell and Living Classroom’s Adventures in Environmental Leadership. Twenty Dundalk Elementary School students, who attended a spring 2008 in-school program, will advance their learning about space and their environment during a program this summer. In June, Adventures in Environmental Leadership helped more than 350 students from Dundalk and Logan Elementary Schools learn how to become environmental stewards in their communities.
Students will learn by doing. The weeklong program, held July 21-25, will introduce Dundalk Elementary School (Dundalk, Md.) students to science and nature through hands-on lab activities, enable them to explore outer space at the CCBC Planetarium, and provide them with a two-day shipboard experience. Students will board the Skipjack Sigsbee to learn about the Chesapeake Bay, its history, industry and commerce; the people who live on its shores; and the living creatures that inhabit this body of water. On Friday, July 25, students will plant oak trees at Dundalk Elementary School.
“CCBC’s partnership opens the college world to Dundalk Elementary students participating in Adventures in Environmental Leadership ensuring students another unique learning experience,” said David Wickersham, director of Global Remediation Services for Honeywell. “Honeywell Hometown Solutions is proud to work with CCBC and Living Classrooms. What better way to help students learn than through a program that offers hands-on activities that are stimulating and fun.”
Adventures in Environmental Leadership is part of Living Classrooms Foundation’s acclaimed environmental education curriculum, School Leadership in Urban Runoff Reduction Project (SLURRP). The program will bring Living Classrooms’ “Learning by Doing” hands-on approach to the Greater Dundalk community. Students will learn about how their actions on land affect the Chesapeake Bay and, ultimately, the world.
“Teachers often struggle to implement the required curriculum and do not have the time or resources to involve students in extra projects," said Scott Raymond, vice president of Education for the Living Classrooms Foundation. "We are excited to partner with Honeywell and CCBC to be able to address these challenges."
"We understand that these students are our future in this community," added Dr. Carol Sullivan, CCBC Dundalk campus dean. "This environmental leadership program will not only educate these students, but hopefully ensure they go on to share what they have learned with others in their community."
The program is fully aligned with the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum in science and has cross-curricular alignment in reading and math. The program also supports the Chesapeake 2000 Agreement, a multi-state guide for Bay restoration and preservation projects and an important part of the state of Maryland’s education reform. Goals are to offer a meaningful watershed educational experience for every school student in the watershed and provide students and teachers alike with opportunities to directly participate in local restoration and protection projects.
