Cockpit in Court’s ‘Urinetown: The Musical’ is flush with social commentary
Musical comedy runs July 18-Aug. 3 in the B Building Theatre at CCBC Essex

Baltimore County, Md. –
Think times are tough now with soaring gas prices and foreclosures, imagine a time in the near future when a 20-year drought leads to a government-enforced ban of private toilets! This is the plot of Cockpit in Court’s hilarious production “Urinetown: The Musical,” which opens on the Mainstage of the B Building Theatre at the Community College of Baltimore County’s Essex campus (7201 Rossville Blvd.) Friday, July 18 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3. For information or tickets ($18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $12 for children), call CCBC Box Office at 410-780-6369 or e-mail cockpitincourt@ccbcmd.edu.

The song “Urinetown” explains the plot – “It’s the oldest story—Masses are oppressed; Faces, clothes and bladders all distressed. Rich folks get the good life; poor folks get the woe. In the end, it’s nothing you don’t know.” This satirical look at the plight of the citizens forced to use public facilities which are regulated by a single malevolent company “U G C.” Run by Caldwell B. Caldwell (the villain!), “U G C” can (and does) manipulate the prices for the use of the facility!

Our hero, Bobby Strong, heads a “coup” to take back our toilets. And so it goes the struggle against greed, government corruption, and basic human rights. If you didn’t laugh, you would cry.

Cockpit in Court’s production features Liz Boyer Hunnicutt of Nottingham, Md. as Penelope Pennywise; Tom Burns of Baltimore, Md. as Bobby Strong; Tammy Crisp of Essex, Md. as Little Sally, John Desmone of Stewartstown, Pa. as Caldwell B Caldwell, Ken Ewing of Dundalk as Officer Lockstock, Karina Ferry of Baltimore, Md. as Little Becky Two Shoes, Sarah Fitzpatrick of Essex, Md. as Josephine Strong, Drew Gaver of Baltimore, Md. as McQueen, Brian Jacobs of Baltimore, Md. as Hot Blades Harry, Renee Monica of Sykesville as Hope Caldwell and Thom Sinn of Lutherville, Md. as Barrel.

Rob Oppel directs this comedic romp. Julie Parrish is the musical director and Lori Perron as the choreographer. James Hunnicutt is the Managing Director for Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre. “Urinetown: The Musical” premiered at the Fringe Festival in 1999 to rave reviews for its irreverent look at government, big business and greed. It even takes pot shots at classic musicals – “West Side Story” and “Sweeney Todd.” Fox45 is the media sponsor for this year’s Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre.

“Urinetown: The Musical” opens on the Mainstage of the B Building Theatre at the Community College of Baltimore County’s Essex campus, 7201 Rossville Blvd. Friday, July 18 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3.
