CCBC holds first Commencement on campus grounds May 31
More than 600 students expected to participate in graduation ceremony hosted at CCBC Essex

Baltimore, Md. – In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Community College of Baltimore County is holding its 2008 commencement ceremony on campus grounds at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 31 at CCBC Essex. This is the first combined graduation ceremony that CCBC has held onsite since becoming a single college in 1998. Last year’s ceremony was held at First Mariner Arena.

More than 1,700 CCBC students are graduating with associate degrees and approximately 627 are expected to participate in the graduation ceremony. A tent, positioned on the multi-purpose field of the Essex campus, will be where the ceremony takes place. A reception for graduates and their guests will follow immediately after the ceremony in Building B.

This year’s graduation speaker is fellow graduate Rebecca Kuhn. Kuhn is the personification of a “superwoman.” A single mother of two daughters, Kuhn worked two jobs, attended CCBC full time and still managed to earn a 4.0 grade point average. Despite her busy schedule as a student and working mother, Kuhn remained involved on campus, active in Phi Theta Kappa, the Honors program, the Women’s Studies Club, the Student Government Association and the Student Book Club. She also served on the staff of the campus newspaper, The Montage, contributed to the campus literary magazine and co-directed a production of The Vagina Monologues for the Women’s Studies Club.

Kuhn is well poised to continue her education this fall at Goucher College, where she plans to major in Secondary Education concentrating in English. And, most recently, she was awarded a $30,000 scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, the largest scholarship offered in the U.S. to community college transfer students. Her career goal is to teach English at the high school level.

Due to Kuhn’s stellar academic history, along with her extraordinary list of student involvement and extracurricular activities, she is also being presented with this year’s President’s Distinguished Graduate Award.
