S-STEM Scholarship Application

 
 
 

The goal of the S-STEM scholarships is to encourage more students, especially those from under-represented groups, to pursue an academic degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, and transfer to a 4-year college/university or enter these fields for a career. Twenty scholarships per semester will be granted during each of the school years 2008-2009 through 2011-2012, through funding by the National Science Foundation. Each scholarship will be worth up to $10,000 per year (divided equally between fall and spring semesters), and cannot exceed the student's unmet financial need.

Eligibility Requirements: 

The applicants must: 

  1. have a minimum GPA of 2.8 for initial award, or for renewal.

  2. be a full time student registered for at least 12 credits (including any developmental courses) while receiving scholarship funds.

  3. be currently enrolled in one of these 7 eligible associate degree programs: Biology (BIOL), Chemistry (CHEM), Computer Science (CMSC), Engineering (ENGR), Environmental Science (ENVS), Mathematics (MATH), or Physics (PHYS).

  4. be ready to complete an Associate’s degree program in at most 2 years

  5. be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or Refugee Alien.

  6. be eligible for Financial Assistance and have unmet financial need.

  7. have CCBC Math Placement test level of MATH 083 Intermediate Algebra or higher, or have completed MATH 082 Introductory Algebra with C or higher.

Although the scholarship is open to everyone, we strongly encourage women, students of African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Pacific Islander ethnicity, and people with disabilities to apply.

Note: Student must maintain good full-time academic standing by completing 12 or more credits with 2.8 semester GPA or higher to be eligible for a second semester/year of award.

Application Materials:

To be considered, the applicant must submit: 

  1. a completed scholarship application, which includes an evaluation from the Financial Aid Office

  2. proof of your Accuplacer Math Placement level at CCBC, or completion of MATH 082 or higher

  3. an essay describing your interest in, and plans for, a career in BIOL, CHEM, CMSC, ENGR, ENVS, MATH, or PHYS. It should also include academic or personal accomplishments, community or school involvement, and obstacles you may have faced in attaining a college education. Please limit the essay to 2 pages double-spaced.

  4. a copy of your transcript (CCBC transcripts may be unofficial; high school transcripts if you are a new CCBC student, should be official.)

Applications will be considered starting June 1 for Fall, or December 1 for Spring, and will continue until 20 students are selected. Priority will be given to complete applications received by this date. All applicants will be notified when selections have been made, and before the semester begins.
