Name: Erik Miller
Title/s: Assistant Professor
Department/s: Computer Graphics and Visual Communication
Division: School of Applied and Information Technology
Years of service at CCBC: 4
My teaching philosophy is that I believe classroom-based
instruction is a challenging balance between engaging presentation and
applicable content. My goal is to get students enthusiastic about
learning as much as they can about their chosen subject and give them
the life-long tools to succeed with their learning processes and styles.
I usually teach anything that we offer in the CGVC program;
recently, I’ve been teaching classes in the print design curriculum, but
for my first few semesters, I primarily taught interactive and web
design courses. I also teach an occasional class in the art department
as well.
CCBC’s greatest strength is its faculty, of course!
CCBC’s greatest weakness is not enough good advertising to
the general public about all of the programs and courses we offer.
My most rewarding experience at CCBC has been the day to day
exchanges with my students and colleagues. It’s the little things that
make my work worthwhile, and I see evidence of the larger impact of
these experiences as I continue in my teaching career.
If I could change one thing at CCBC, it would be to give the
students much more space to gather on our campuses. Essex has the right
idea with their Cyber Café; give CCBC students and faculty casual
environments in which to share their experiences and ideas.
CCBC students are intuitive, challenging, precocious, and real.
My other professional experiences include art directing for an
interactive design firm, creating web graphics and interfaces for a
software firm, art directing and designing for a screen printing
company, illustrating for a t-shirt design shop, and teaching at several
different institutions.
I am currently reading Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War
by Clive Barker and The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Tales by
H.P. Lovecraft.
Outside CCBC, I enjoy playing cars and trucks with my son,
watching movies with my wife, drawing, eating spicy food, listening to
music, and the NFL.
