Name: Dr. Maureen L. McDonough

Department
Department: Teacher Education
Division: Business, Social Science, Wellness and Education
Years of service at CCBC: 19
Teaching philosophy: All students must be given every opportunity
and support to succeed, but this opportunity must be balanced by
challenging students to take charge of their own destiny. As
instructors, we must be positive role models; this is especially
critical in teacher education where our students are future teachers.
I usually teach the Field Placement course (EDTR 273) which is an
internship experience for teacher education students. This allows me to
work “hands on” in helping to prepare students to transfer to four-year
institutions and also to guide the early childhood career students in
authentic work environments.
My greatest strength as a professor is my genuine respect for the
effort that students make to succeed; this translates into extra effort
on my part to understand their needs and to guide them accordingly.
One of my biggest concerns as a professor is that students have
too many distractions from their academic work. I have found that
students who have overwhelming employment or family demands do not have
the time to do the high quality coursework we expect and that they are
capable of.
My most rewarding experience at CCBC has been to lead the teacher
education expand into becoming a comprehensive, coherent program across
the three campuses.
CCBC students are sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating; diverse
in background, yet alike in their goals; generally respectful, caring
and honest. They drive too fast. Slow down!!!
Previous professional experiences: As an Army wife I taught in
colleges and universities around the United States and in Spain before
coming to . ICatonsville. I was also a social worker in Baltimore City
a long time ago have been privileged to serve in a variety of roles and
positions here at CCBC.
Outside of CCBC, I enjoy the Florida Keys, Ocean City, fishing,
reading, visiting my friends around the country and my three grown,
married children (and five grand dogs). I love sports and am an avid
Syracuse fan—go Orange! My husband (of 36 years) and I enjoy walking on
the beach with our Irish setter, Gallagher and boating every chance we
get.
