DNHY 110 – 3 Credits
Dental Hygiene Theory I
Introduces the fundamental concepts of oral health care services, disease control, infections control practices, dental hygiene instrumentation and assessment techniques. Additionally, students are introduced to concepts of client motivation, educational techniques, disease prevention strategies, and the dental hygiene process of care.
Prerequisites: Acceptance to the Dental Hygien Program
Co-requisites: DNHY 111, 112, 113, 114 and 115.
DNHY 111 – 2 Credits
Dental Hygiene Clinical I
provides an opportunity to perform clinical dental hygiene procedures, including basic instrumentation, infection control, assessment, education and treatment planning skills, Students will have an oppotunity to practice and develop these skills on typodonts and or student partners under direct supervision.
Co-requisites: DNHY 110, DNHY 112, DNHY 113, DNHY 114, and DNHY 115

DNHY 112 – 3 Credits
Dental Anathomy, Histology and Embryology
Examines the development, eruption, function and basic morphological characteristics of the permanent and deciduous human dention, the growth and development of the face and oral cavity. This course introduces the histology and embryology of the face, oral and nasal cavities, the teeth, and the various components of the teeth and surrounding tissues.
Co-requisites: DNHY 110,111,113,114,115.
DNHY 113 – 2 Credits
Head and Neck Anatomy
Examines the surface anatomy and underlying anatomical structures of the oral cavity and of the head and neck, concentrating on the function and relationship of muscles, nerves, blood supply, lymphatic drainage, cranial and face bones (with emphasis on the maxilla and mandible) and their anatomical and functional relationship to the teeth.
Co-requisites: DNHY 110, 111, 112, 114, 115.
DNHY 114 – 1 Credit
Medical Emergencies in Dentistry
Introduces the recognition, prevention and management of medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. Emphasis is placed on etiology and pathology of common chronic diseases. Students have the opportunity to develop routine standard operating procedures in an emergency situation during simulated emergencies in the clinical settings.

DNHY 115 – 3 Credits
Dental Radiology
Introduces the basic principles of radiation physics; radiation biology; hygiene and safety factors; radiographic quality assurance; the application and theory of properly exposing, processing, mounting, and evaluating radiographs; identification of normal anatomic landmarks and pathologic conditions; client selection criteria; and interpretation of radiographs.

DNHY 120 – 2 Credits
Dental Hygiene Theory II
Examines the theories and practices of dental hygiene care with emphasis on advanced instrumentation techniques and suppportive dental hygiene theraphy
including tobacco cessation intervention, fluoridation and fluoride therapy, supplementary aids, chemotherapeutics, and desensitization. The student examines the dental hygiene process of care emphasizing treatment planning.
Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in DNHY 110, DNHY 111, DNHY 112, DNHY 113, DNHY 114 and DNHY 115.
Co-requisites: DNHY 121, 122, 123, 124.
DNHY 121 – 2 Credits
Dental Hygiene Clinical II-A
Provides the opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and clinical skills with client assessments, instrumentation and preventive techniques, with emphasis on providing care for the light to moderate classification clients. Under appropriate supervision, students provide client care assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Co-requisities: DNHY 120, DNHY 122, DNHY 123, and DNHY 124

DNHY 122 – 2 Credits
Periodontology
Reviews the theoretical and practical study of the periodontium and changes that occur in the presence of disease processes. It includes the ideology, classification. diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of periodontal disease. Emphasis is placed on prevention and controlling the disease process.
Co-requisites: DNHY 120, 121, 123, 124.
DNHY 123 – 2 Credits
Dental Materials & Procedures
Introduces the students to the purpose and use of various dental materials utilized in dentistry. It includes the physical, chemical, biological and mechanical properties of materials commonly used in dentistry. Laboratory experiences emphasize proper manipulation of the various dental materials.

DNHY 124 – 2 Credits
Nutrition & Biochemistry in Dentistry
Reviews general nutrition and nutrition biochemistry with emphasis on the relationship between nutrition and dental health. Analysis of diet and application of counseling strategies to assist the client in attaining and maintaining optimum overall health will be stressed.
Prerequisities: DNHY 110, DNHY 111, DNHY 112, DNHY 113, DNHY 114, and DNHY 115.
Corequisities: DNHY 120, DNHY 121, DNHY 122, and DNHY 123
DNHY 131 – 1 Credit
Dental Hygiene Clinical II-B
Provides the students with the opportunity to enhance and refine their clinical skills, enabling them to provide comprehensive oral health care services with an emphasis on clients with more advanced periodontal disease. Under appropriate supervision, students provide client care assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of DNHY 120, DNHY 121, DNHY 123, and DNHY 124.

DNHY 210 – 2 Credits
Dental Hygiene Theory III
Provides a continuation of the study of dental hygiene theory and practice to include root planning, subgingival irrigation, powered scaling, air polishing, and case presentation. This course examines the care and clinical management of clients with special needs and reviews the essential components and clinical procedures performed in the various dental specialities.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of DNHY 131.
Co-requisites: DNHY 211, 212, 213.
DNHY 211 – 3 Credits
Dental Hygiene Clinical III
Provides the students with the opportunity to expand on the principles and clinical skills of dental hygiene practice with an emphasis on non-surgical periodontal therapy. Under appropriate supervision, students provide client care assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Co-requisites: DNHY 210, DNHY 212, and DNHY 213

DNHY 212 – 2 Credits
General and Oral Pathology
Focuses on the fundamentals of general pathology, the disease process and oral pathology with emphasis on the recognition and identification of pathogenic conditions that most frequently occur with oral and surrounding structures.
Co-requisites: DNHY 210, 211, 213.
DNHY 220 – 1 Credit
Dental Hygiene Theory IV
Introduces the students to a study of professional ethics and dental jurisprudence, professional organizations, and issues involving the dental hygiene profession. Students learn the laws and rules governing the practice of dental hygiene in the state of Maryland. Practice management skills and employment preparation including resumes and interview techniques are reviewed.
Prerequisites: successful completion of DNHY 210, 211, 212 and 213.
Co-requisites: DNHY 221 & 222.
DNHY 221 – 3 Credits
Dental Hygiene Clinical IV
Provides the students with culminating experiences and opportunities to practice the responsibilities of an entry-level dental hygienist. Emphasis is on fine tuning clinical skills, comprehensive treatment planning, self-assessment, and independent decision making. Additionally, this course focuses on the transition to dental hygiene practice beyond graduation.

DNHY 222 – 3 Credits
Community Dental Health
Introduces the concepts, methods and issues in dental health and group dental health insturction. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based criteria for effective promotional methods in the prevention of dental disease in the public health setting. Extramural experience provides an opportunity to assume responsibility for designing, implementing and assessing community dental health programs.
