Emergency Medical Technology

EMST 105 – 6 Credits
Emergency Medical Technician Basic

Introduces theory and techniques of basic emergency medical care in the pre-hospital setting and pathophysiological principles related to the recognition and management of a variety of patient conditions; satisfies the requirements leading to State and National EMT-Basic certification and is 131 clock hours. NOTE: Students seeking State of Maryland certification as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) must be affiliated with a Maryland career, volunteer, or commercial ambulance service prior to the State certification examinations. Students who are not affiliated prior to the State certification examinations will be allowed to take the examinations but must also pay a testing fee established by the State, and collected at the time of the examinations and will not receive State certification as an EMT-B until they have gained affiliation.

Prerequisites: Students must be at least 18 years-of-age and have a high school diploma or GED, must be able to meet the minimum physical and psychological requirements for an EMT-B as stated in the Functional Job Analysis for Emergency Medical Technicians Lab fee: $25.00

EMST 210 – 2 Credits
EMT Intermediate Foundations

Introduces principles and practices of patient assessment, advanced airway management and ventilation, intravenous access, pharmacology, and medication administration; discusses medicolegal considerations of advanced prehospital care and human systems.

Prerequisite: EMST 105

EMST 211 – 4 Credits
EMT Intermediate Medical and Trauma Emergencies

Introduces assessment and prehospital management of a variety of common respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, endocrine, and environmental emergencies; provides overview of the mechanisms and prehospital management of a variety of traumatic injuries involving the head, neck, spine, thorax, and abdominal cavities; burns; shock; and basic 3 lead and 12 lead electrocardiography acquisition and interpretation.

Prerequisite: EMST 210

EMST 212 – 1 Credit
EMT Intermediate Special Populations

Introduces special techniques of assessment and prehospital management of patients presenting with obstetrical emergencies; discusses neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric emergencies.

Prerequisite: EMST 211

EMST 213 – 2 Credits
EMT Intermediate Assessment Based Management

Applies understanding and knowledge of patient assessment and prehospital management of medical and trauma emergencies; provides interactive, scenario-based environment.

Prerequisite: EMST 212 Lab fee: $25.00

EMST 214 – 2 Credits
EMT Intermediate Clinical Practice

Applies knowledge of emergency and non-emergency advanced life support assessment and management; provides direct supervision of a preceptor/mentor in both the prehospital field environment and a hospital emergency department.

Prerequisite: EMST 213

EMST 220 – 2 Credits
Paramedic Foundations

Introduces a variety of topics such as paramedic roles and responsibilities, medicolegal issues, life span development, therapeutic communication, illness and injury prevention; introduces 12 lead electrocardiography acquisition and interpretation.

Prerequisite: EMST 214

EMST 221 – 5 Credits
Paramedic Medical and Trauma Emergencies

Discusses pathophysiological principles and advanced prehospital management of a variety of common disease processes and medical emergencies including allergies and anaphylaxis, toxicology, hematology, infectious disease, and many other medical emergencies; includes the mechanisms of injury, patient presentations, assessment, and advanced prehospital management of a variety of trauma emergencies involving major systems of the human body.

Prerequisite: EMST 220

EMST 222 – 2 Credits
Paramedic Pharmacology

Provides in-depth understanding for the safe, effective, and rational use of therapeutic agents by the Paramedic in prehospital emergency care; discusses commonly abused drugs and poisons.

Prerequisite: EMST 221

EMST 223 – 2 Credits
Paramedic Assessment Based Management

Applies knowledge of patient assessment and prehospital management of a variety of medical and trauma emergencies; develops advanced life support skills.

Prerequisite: EMST 222 Lab fee: $25.00

EMST 224 – 2 Credits
Paramedic Clinical Practice

Provides opportunity to practice emergency and non-emergency advanced life support assessment and management under the direct supervision of a preceptor/mentor; provides a variety of clinical settings including field EMS unit, operating room, neonatal and pediatric departments, psychiatric unit, and burn center.
