HIST 101 – 3 Credits
Western Civilization I: Ancient and Medieval History

Highlights significant periods in Mediterranean and European history from the earliest civilizations through the Reformation; surveys the major literary, religious, artistic, scientific, political, social, and economic developments that constitute Western civilization up to about CE 1550.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and ENGL 052 or ESOL 052

HIST 102 – 3 Credits
Western Civilization I: Modern History

Surveys the major literary, religious, scientific, artistic, political, social, and economic developments that constitute Western civilization in the modern era (since about CE 1500); examines the development of the modern state system, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the Age of Revolution.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and ENGL 052 or ESOL 052

HIST 111 – 3 Credits
History of the United States I

Surveys America's early clash of cultures, European and African background, settlement, Revolution, new government, expansion, and sectionalism through the Civil War; an in-depth analysis of selected issues, periods, personalities or institutions in an effort to understand the youthful nation's changing, often clashing, attitudes and values.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and ENGL 052 or ESOL 052. Need not be taken in sequence with HIST 112

HIST 112 – 3 Credits
History of the United States II

Investigates America's growth after the Civil War; considers the many changes in the economy, society and foreign policy that resulted from expansion and industrialization.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and ENGL 052 or ESOL 052. Need not be taken in sequence with HIST 111

HIST 116 – 3 Credits
African-American History Overview

Examines the origin of African American people in continental Africa and traces the black experience in America to the present; emphasis will be placed on: African roots, transition to slavery, the realities of slavery, opposition to slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction and its aftermath, the period of Jim Crowism, black nationalism, African American participation in the World Wars, institutional development, and the modern Civil Rights movement.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and ENGL 052 or ESOL 052

HIST 117 – 3 Credits
African American History to 1876

Explores the many roles of people of African ancestry in the history of the United States from 1619 to 1876; an in-depth examination of the institution of slavery and the many ways African Americans responded to it.

HIST 118 – 3 Credits
African American History since 1876

Examines the life of African Americans since the end of the Reconstruction; emphasis is placed on the origins and development of segregation, the role of African Americans in America's 20th century wars, rights movement and its consequences, and on the lingering racial problems that still exist in the United States.

HIST 120 – 3 Credits
Ethnicity: American Dream

Integrates methods, assumptions, and values of history, political philosophy and other social sciences and examines the American experience from a multicultural perspective; explores how gender, race, ethnicity, religion, economic class, and sexual orientation influence the realization of the American Dream.

Prerequisites: ENGL 101

HIST 127 – 3 Credits
Native American History

Analyzes the diversity of Native cultures in North America. Emphasis is placed on studying Native American history and culture both to better understand that specific group of people and to provide a framework for understanding issues related to colonization and representation on both a national and global scale. NOTE: Same as ANTH 127. Credit can be earned for one course only.

Prerequisites: ENGL 052 or ESOL 052 and RDNG 052 or ESOL 054

HIST 130 – 3 Credits
American Econimic History

Explores America's economic development from the 17th through the 20th century; analyzes selected issues, periods, personalities, or institutions in an effort to understand the nation's changing economic attitudes, values, and development as the world's largest economy. Recommended as essential background for all students in history and business.

Prerequisites: RDNG 052 or ESOL 054 and ENGL 052

HIST 134 – 3 Credits
History of American Labor

Examines the development of the union movement in the United States as well as an examination of common workplace issues; covers various ways of recording history, with an emphasis on non-traditional workers history and legal, political, and social aspects of American workers.

Prerequisites: ENGL 052 or ESOL 052, RDNG 052 or ESOL 054

HIST 150 – 3 Credits
The Movies: Historical and Aesthetic Perspective

Studies the development of motion pictures from their origin as a late 19th century curiosity to their present status as powerful form of mass communication; examines the development of film techniques and the evolution of popular movie genres such as the western, the horror film, the science fiction/fantasy film, and the animated feature film. NOTE: Same as MCOM 150. Credit can be earned for one course only.

The American Woman

Provides an in-depth study of the lives and experiences of the American woman from the 17th century to the present. NOTE: Same as WMST 220. Credit can be earned for one course only.

Prerequisite: HIST 111 or HIST 112 or WMST 101 or written permission from instructor required
