The American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)

Sign Language interpreters must possess high levels of proficiency in both English and ASL. Therefore, in order to maintain the highest standards for the Interpreter Preparation Program at CCBC, there is a requirement for a minimum level of ASL proficiency.

The ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview) is a nationally recognized tool used to measure language proficiency in ASL. The ASLPI consists of a structured conversation/interview between a candidate and a neutral team of three Deaf raters who are not CCBC INTR faculty. The interview is videotaped and lasts about 20 minutes.

Following the interview, the candidate’s performance is given a numerical rating ranging from 0 – 5 (0 lowest - 5 highest) which is based on the Educational Testing Service Model, Language Proficiency Interview (LPI). There is a 30 day time limit for any appeals, which must be submitted in writing to Ricky Perry, with a copy to Sandy Brown, Coordinator.

Students must have taken the ASLPI (minimum score not required) before being eligible for INTR 216, Pre-Interpreting Skills. Students are required to pass the ASLPI with a minimum level of 2.0 before being eligible for INTR 211, Linguistics of ASL, and at least a 2.5 before being eligible for INTR 241, Practicum. The fee for the ASLPI is $100; it is the student’s responsibility to pay for this test.

Your ASL IV and V instructors will be reviewing the ASLPI process with you in class. Any questions regarding scheduling appointments can be directed to Ricky Perry at rperry@ccbcmd.edu .
