November 2009 is event-full at CCBC

Baltimore County, MD –The Community College of Baltimore County hosts a host of activities ranging from information sessions for prospective students to discussions on controversial and thought-provoking themes during November.

The Arts at CCBC (http://ccbcmd.edu/arts) mounts three original productions this November.
CINEMAGIC, a salute to the silver screen and Hollywood’s colorful musical history by Arne Lindquist and performed by the Senior Star Showcase on 2 pm. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7-8 in the B Building Theatre at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Tickets are $12 general admission; $10 seniors, CCBC faculty and students and $8 for groups of 10 or more. War Stories to Stage, a theatrical performance by CCBC Theatre students based on interviews with CCBC International Students and directed by Julie Lewis of the CCBC Theatre faculty in conjunction with the Community Book Connection. Performances will be given at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the Theatre at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard; 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 in the K Building John E. Ravekes Theatre, CCBC Dundalk 7200 Sollers Point Road, and 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 in the Q Building Theatre, CCBC Catonsville, 800 South Rolling Road. All performances are free and open to the public.

Upon His Back He Carries Them is an original play by CCBC associate professor Carl Freundel commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of African Art in conjunction with Discovery Theatre in 1997. CCBC Catonsville Academic Theatre students will perform this tribute to Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I, Kwaku Dua Asamu III, a former King of Ghana whose contributions to civil rights are on a par with Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, 8 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Nov. 18, 20-21; 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 and 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20 in the Building Q Theatre at CCBC Catonsville, 800 South Rolling Road. Tickets are $8 general admission and $5 for seniors, students, CCBC faculty, staff and alumni. CCBC’s Diana Marta’s 25-year retrospective, Puppet Show, continues on exhibit 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and by appointment (Mondays – Saturdays) through Thursday, Nov. 19 in The Gallery at CCBC Catonsville, Q Building, 800 South Rolling Road. Nov. 6 – free opening reception for the artist 6-8 p.m.

Nov. 4 – Black Student Union/Community Book Connection – Slavery in America: Modern Day Human Trafficking
The Black Student Union and the Community Book Connection presents a panel discussion on Slavery in America: Modern Day Human Trafficking 10-11:30 a.m., H-308-ABC at CCBC Catonsville, 800 South Rolling Road. CCBC student and BSU president Evelyn Chumbow will discuss her first-hand experiences as a modern-day slave. Other guest speakers include Tiffany Williams, a social worker from the “Break the Chain Campaign” and Melanie Orhant, Esq. former director of Pro Bono Services at the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. Nov. 4 – CCBC Essex Spotlight Speaker – James McBride – The Color of Water: A Meditation on Identity
Author, musician and screenwriter James McBride is November’s Spotlight Speaker. McBride, the author of the highly acclaimed The Color of Water and Song Yet Sung, will speak on The Color of Water: A Meditation on Identity 12:20 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, B Building Theatre, CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Nov. 5 – Getting Started at CCBC/Admissions Information Session at CCBC Dundalk

Nov. 6 – Music Forum – Pop Student Recital
Talented CCBC Music students perform pop, jazz and musical theatre selections 12:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 in the E Building Recital Hall at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Free and open to the public. Call the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-ARTS for details.

Nov. 7 – CCBC Foundation, Inc. - Dundalk Bull Roast
The CCBC Foundation, Inc. - Dundalk hosts its annual fall Bull Roast 7-11 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7 at the UAW Hall, 1010 S. Oldham Street. Tickets are $35 per person. This event supports the Marie Lloyd/Ed Lamon scholarship for CCBC students. Games, raffles, door prizes and dancing are included in your ticket price. Nov. 7, 8 – Senior Star Showcase --CINEMAGIC

The Maryland State Boychoir, Maryland’s official “Goodwill Ambassadors,” comprised of approximately 150 choristers ages 7 to 20 years, will perform 12:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 in the E Building Recital Hall at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Nov. 17 – Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone, 2009 Community Book Connection selection -- SOLD OUT
Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone, will deliver the 2009 Community Book Connection keynote lecture on issues surrounding children and war that he raises in his memoir. He will also touch on his experiences as a boy soldier and then as a man writing about those experiences. The program will be given 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17 in the K Building John E. Ravekes Theatre at CCBC Dundalk, 7200 Sollers Point Road and again at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17 in the Q Building Theatre at CCBC Catonsville, 800 South Rolling Road.
