EMERITUS POLICY
Upon recommendation of the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees may bestow
on a retired college employee the honor of EMERITUS for those
professionals with outstanding service which contributed to the
strength, growth and integrity of the College. This outstanding service
should be commonly acknowledged by the College community. A person so
honored shall maintain his/her preretirement college title, with the
designation “Emeritus” added on (e.g., Professor Emeritus, Dean
Emeritus, President Emeritus, Chancellor Emeritus). The Emeritus
designation continues during the life of the recipient unless revoked by
formal Board action, upon the recommendation of the Chancellor,
following the same procedures that would be applied to the discharge for
cause of a tenured faculty member.
ELIGIBILITY
1. Candidate for the honor of Emeritus must have had a distinguished
career at the College and must be deemed outstanding when compared to
other employees with similar career requirements. This honor is given in
recognition of outstanding scholarship, service to the College, and/or
work with students.
2. A candidate for designation must be formally retired for at least one
year from The Community College of Baltimore County.
3. Length of service with The Community College of Baltimore County
shall be a minimum of twenty (20) years of service.
PRIVILEGES
Acceptance of the honor entitles an Emeritus to special rights and
privileges, in addition to those extended to all retiring employees.
Those receiving the Emeritus designation will have an identification
card permitting the same campus privileges as those for full-time
faculty. These privileges will include the right to participate with
faculty attire at commencement and other formal occasions as well as
invitations to special College functions open to full-time faculty. The
college may award other benefits as appropriate. Voting rights in
College governance are not included.
MECHANISM
1. Any active, full-time professional employee may nominate an
individual for Emeritus status.
2. Nominations will then be considered by the candidate’s unit, dean,
and president, following established procedures for comprehensive review.
3. The Chancellor recommends the award to the Board of Trustees, which
makes the final decision.
4. The Campus President will notify the recipient of the award.
