FallingWater/Kentucky Knob/Summit Inn/Nemacolin Woodlands Resorts - Saturday/Sunday, September 27-28, 2008

Two-Day, One Night Trip

Two glorious days of natural and man-made beauty in Pennsylvania's renowned Laurel Highlands. We start with a bountiful Pennsylvania Dutch Buffet Brunch at Penn Alps Restaurant and Craft Shops which are housed in the last log hospitality house on the National Pike still serving the traveler. It is situated between a 1797 gristmill and a historic stone arch bridge (the longest single span of stone in America when built in 1813). Three of its six dining rooms were once part of the log stagecoach stop Little Crossings Inn.

After brunch we tour the quintessential house museum, Fallingwater. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most widely acclaimed works; the home was designed in 1935 for the family of Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann. The key to the setting of the house is the waterfall over which it is built. Perhaps better than any single work, Fallingwater exemplifies Wright's concept of organic architecture; the harmonious union of architecture and nature.

Next we proceed to Kentuck Knob, another Wright home built on a hexagonal grid, and constructed entirely of tidewater red cypress and native fieldstone with an open floor plan, cantilevered overhangs and great expanses of glass artfully integrating the outdoor and indoor spaces.

Saturday evening the group checks into the historic Summit Inn, the 1907 hotel with breathtaking views and distinguished history. Stay where Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Warren G. Harding and Harry S. Truman rocked on the veranda.

Dinner is on your own in the hotel dining room with its varied menu, historic atmosphere, and turn of the century décor. Relax after dinner or enjoy some of the hotel's amenities - heated indoor pool, indoor hot tub, exercise room, tennis courts, shuffleboard, horseshoe courts - and prepare for tomorrow's adventures.

Enjoy breakfast on your own in the hotel's dining room, check out and then we'll depart for a short trip to Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Chateau LaFayette, inspired by the classic hotels of Europe. We will have a guided tour of the Hardy Art Collection, an eclectic collection ranging from a 17th-century Queen Elizabeth portrait, to a 20th-century Alexander Calder mobile. Delight in the works of Leroy Neiman, Fernando Botero, Oleg Cassini, and Remington, just to name a few, along with a collection of nostalgic memorabilia. After the tour there will be some free time to check out the shops in Heritage Court before we meet up for lunch.

Lunch will consist of Soup du Jour, Grilled Chicken Breast with Chef's selection of accompaniments, fresh rolls and butter, beverage, and crème brulee with fresh fruit.

Reluctantly, we depart this “American Classic” resort for our return through the beautiful Pennsylvania and Western Maryland mountains.

Reservations and payment in full due by August 22.

Note: This trip will depart from and return to the Essex Campus of CCBC.

COST: $320 per person - Double (two people sharing a room) $390- Single

Cape May, Victorian Week - Sunday/Monday, Oct 12 - 13, 2008

Two-Day, One Night Trip

We'll arrive in Cape May in time for a Trolley Tour of the town and a visit to the Physick Estate. We'll have a guided tour of the 1879 Physick Estate, Cape May's only Victorian house museum, with 15 rooms authentically restored to their original grandeur and changing seasonal exhibits. The Physick Estate is also home to the Carriage House Gallery and its current exhibit “Mediums Well Done, the World of Victorian Spiritualism.” Then travel around Cape May in one of the picturesque trolleys as knowledgeable guides point out landmark buildings and their architectural features, and entertain visitors with accounts of Cape May's reign as “Queen of the Seaside Resorts.”

We'll enjoy a late lunch at Aleathea's where turn-of-century style and elegance is respected. Set in the Inn of Cape May, Aleathea's definitely has its charm. The ceilings are decorated with fans and small chandeliers. Antique sideboards accent the dusty rose walls.

The lunch choices are:

- Aleathea's Crab Cake Platter or
- Honey Baked Chicken Breast,
both served with Soup of the Day, vegetable and potato, beverage, and Chef selected dessert (please indicate choice when making reservations).

Afterwards we'll check into the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel. Each room is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave, and an ocean view balcony. The evening will be free for shopping, dining, or just relaxing. Breakfast at the hotel is included and the morning is open to do whatever you please, so take your time, relax, have lunch, and enjoy the day until we meet up at 2:00 pm to visit the Cape May Designer Show House. Beautifully decorated by top designers from cellar to attic, this show house can inspire any homeowner's dreams!
