Baltimore, Md. – (May 14, 2014) – Community College of Baltimore County has selected student Jonathan Norton as its 2014 President’s Distinguished Graduate Award recipient. This award is given annually to students who have shown exemplary leadership and a commitment to help others.

Jonathan Norton is the recipient of this year's President’s Distinguished Graduate Award.

Norton, who lives in Overlea, Md., will be presented with the award at CCBC’s 2014 Commencement ceremony which takes place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 31 at CCBC Essex. Norton will also deliver the commencement address to his fellow students.

Described by faculty as “academically gifted,” “enormously motivated” and “keenly conscientious,” Norton never imagined that his college journey at CCBC would be so fruitful. Growing up in a blue-collar family, Norton automatically sought a trade after completing high school. That career path worked for a while until he sustained an injury on the job which made him rethink his future.

“Getting injured was a blessing in disguise for me,” said Norton,” because it gave me an open door to seek my higher calling in life.”

With a new-found determination, Norton enrolled at CCBC. What he claimed wasn’t an easy decision became one of his best decisions.

Norton thrived at CCBC entering the Honor’s program and becoming heavily involved on campus. He served as a Student Life Ambassador, a member of the Anthropology Club, officer at the Student Honors Council, president of the Chi Theta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and a student representative to the faculty Honors Committee. He also participated in Alternative Break where he and other CCBC students spent their summer break working in Guatemala to aid the Mayan community.

Even though Norton remained heavily involved at CCBC, he didn’t let his grades suffer. On May 31, Norton will graduate with a 4.0 Grade Point Average and an associate degree in General Studies. He already has offers to attend major universities where he will study Psychology and become the first male in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

“My experiences at CCBC far outweigh the monetary value that has been paid for them,” said Norton. “The friendships, professional relationships and insights that I have gained as a student, leader and community servant inspire me to create a ripple effect that will be seen in the distant future when my time has passed. There will be no fear of failure that will stop me from pursuing my academic and professional endeavors.”
