Whether you're a student taking astronomy classes or a member of the community, the Banneker Planetarium at CCBC Catonsville allows you to see our universe from a whole new perspective.
The Benjamin Banneker Planetarium is a classroom-sized facility (seating capacity: 65) used primarily for college classes and shows to groups from area schools and the community. It has been in operation since 1966 and now has a newly-installed Evans and Sutherland Digistar digital projector. The projector is housed in a 10-meter dome planetarium, which is part of the Mathematics and Science Hall (MASH), room 030A.
The Planetarium is named for Benjamin Banneker, a free black man who lived in the neighboring area of Oella and who, as a self-taught man of science, was the author of a series of almanacs during the 1790s.
Presented by Professor David Ludwikoski, Planetarium Director, these shows have been arranged for the general public to attend free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, please call 443.840.1711 for possible closings.
We offer free shows for elementary, middle, high or college school groups, during our fall and spring semesters. We also offer summer shows on a limited basis.
Our shows take place on weekdays at 10:15 a.m. Depending on the age group, shows run anywhere from 30-45 minutes. To book a show for your students, contact Erin Gray (egray3@ccbcmd.edu).
