Essential Skills Classes


Classes marked as *Grant Funded" are supported by grant funding from Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.

Essential Skills I
Learn basic educatiol skills in reading and mathematics. The preparation in this course is for real-life skills, and further education including Essential Skills II. Topics to be covered include reading comprehension, language, writing, and number skills. To register, see GED/Essential Skills Registration Information.

Essential Skills II
Learn the skills required to develop and review the basic reading, writing, and math skills needed to transition to tEssential Skills III. Topics to be covered include reading comprehnsion improvement, parts of speech, vocablulary, sentence structure, paragraph development, critical thinking skills, decimals, fractions, percentages, and problems solving. Essential Skills III
Learn the skills required to develop and review the reading, writing, and math skills needed to transition to the GED course. Placement testing is required at registration. To register, see GED/Essential Skills Registration Information.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS

Adult Basic Education for ESOL Students

This course is designed to enable the student to learn the structure and expectations of Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes and to speak, read, and write in the English language. Emphasis will be placed on academic language and Edited American English (EAE). Topics to be covered include vocabulary development, speaking and writing exercises, English writing structure, and reading comprehension skills.
Classes will be offered at CCBC Essex. Availability of days and times available at registration (see GED/Essential Skills Registration Information). Level 4 speaking and listening skill level required.

Cost: No tuition (*Grant Funded) Book and Material Fee: $25

Essential Skills I and II (Young Parents Support Center**)

Learn to develop educational skills in reading and mathematics. Classes offered at the Young Parent Support Center. Call the Center for information or to register (410-853-3860 or 410-853-3872). Placement testing required at registration to enroll.

**The Young Parent Support Center offers childcare for children 0-4 years of age during the morning session only. Transportation is available for both morning and afternoon classes.

Review of Math Skills
This class will provide students who possess a high school diploma instruction that will increase skills in whole number place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division needed for job entry-level exams and/or preparation for college entrance assessments. Each class is 30 hours of instruction. Call 443-840-3077 for additional information or 443-840-4700 to register.

Student Support Services
Student Support Services assists students with achieving their education goals.
