History, artifacts, culture and healing

Back by popular demand, Luz Soliz and the Wabafu Garifuna Dance Theater of Garifuna Heritage Center for the Arts and Culture present the instruments used for healing in Garifuna culture. There will be a discussion of the history, showing the traditional artifacts and a short workshop with the audience on the music and healing instruments of the Garifuna people.

The Garifuna people are descendants of indigenous Arawak, Kalinago (Island Carib), and Afro-Caribbean people. They were transplanted to the Central American coast from the island of Saint Vincent. Garifuna communities still live in Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Guatemala and the largest population outside of Central America are the Garifuna Americans from the United States. This event is co-sponsored with the Office of the President and the Institute for Social and Economic Justice(ISEJ).
