Tonya Green is living proof that a dream deferred is not a dream denied. Returning to college after more than 30 years, Tonya graduated with honors and a degree in Human Services.
Determined not to be daunted by the challenge of returning to the classroom after a three-decade absence, Tonya called upon the discipline and tenacity she practiced while serving in the United States Marines. She became involved on campus through the Student Veterans of America Club, connected and engaged with other military-connected and student veterans, and began to flourish academically.
Tonya served as a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community colleges, and SALUTE, the national honor society for student veterans. And, she managed to do all this while volunteering in her community by working with the homeless, advocating for children and serving as a chaplain.
Today, Tonya’s deferred dream is a reality. She actually completed her associate degree in December 2017 and already begun her studies at Towson University, where she is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Gerontology.
Yet, Tonya pledged to give back to CCBC and also help those who desire to follow in her footsteps. She pledged $900 for five years to provide a scholarship for someone like herself – older, single parent, with a longing to earn his or her college degree – to make their journey a little easier.
