The Humanities Pathway presents an opportunity for creativity, exploration, and interpretation. Pursue opportunities to earn foundational transfer credits facilitating the transfer process to a four-year institution. Cultivate invaluable skills and earn credentials toward a transformational path of success. Along this journey, faculty and staff within the Humanities Pathway are available to offer guidance and support to promote success, provide clarity, and forward your career both at CCBC and beyond.

Humanities Programs

American Sign Language and Deaf Culture

The degree in American Sign Language and Deaf Culture is designed to prepare students with the cultural competency and conversational-level fluency needed to engage with members of the American deaf and hard of hearing community. Students can apply the skills they learn in American Sign Language to a variety of job settings.

The foundation from which we educate is based on admiration and respect for the American deaf community as a rich, diverse cultural and linguistic minority who value American Sign Language as their primary mode of communication. This program is designed for both first-time college students and returning students who seek to enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Communication and Media Studies

Through the study of a variety of speech communication contexts, students gain confidence and experience in analyzing, creating, and executing competent communication strategies. More specifically, students learn to analyze, organize, and research significant topics through informative and persuasive public speaking platforms.

Students following the transfer pattern in Creative Writing will study poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and will eventually complete a Capstone class. Many students transfer to area writing programs at the University of Baltimore, Towson University, Morgan, Loyola, and Goucher College to name a few.

General Studies

General Studies offers maximum flexibility for students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree upon graduation from CCBC or for whom a general studies degree best meets their academic goals or career. This program is especially appealing to students who wish to design their own course of study or who have accumulated a significant number of credits from other programs or colleges. Students acquire well-rounded skills to pursue a variety of academic disciplines and careers.

This degree program is designed to serve students who plan to transfer to a baccalaureate degree program in the humanities or social sciences.

Interpreter Prep

The Interpreter Preparation program is designed to provide students with entry-level skills in sign language interpreting. Students will develop skills in expressive and receptive use of American Sign Language and specific technical skills required to interpret and transliterate. In addition, students will study topics relevant to Deaf people and the field of interpreting. Students will experience a wide variety of learning activities to enhance practical skills as well as theoretical knowledge. These include on-site observations and interviews, attendance at Deaf-related community activities, guest lectures, video and audio lab assignments, and classroom lectures.

Philosophy

Philosophy emphasizes the use of critical analysis and critical thinking to examine real life circumstances via philosophical theories and ideas to find relevance and application to everyday life. The Philosophy degree pattern is designed to help students transfer to colleges and universities that offer a baccalaureate degree with a major in Philosophy.
