What is ASLPI?

The ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview) is a nationally recognized tool used to measure language proficiency in ASL.

Sign Language interpreters must possess high levels of proficiency in both English and ASL. In order to maintain the highest standards for the Interpreter Preparation Program at CCBC, there is a entry requirement for a minimum level of ASL proficiency.

The ASLPI consists of a structured conversation/interview between a candidate and a neutral team of Deaf raters who are not CCBC faculty. Most CCBC students take the ASLPI after ASL V.

The interview is videotaped and will last about 20 minutes.

CCBC's requirements:

  • An ASLPI score of 2.0 or higher is required for entry into the A.A.S. or Certificate in Interpreter Preparation.*
  • An ASLPI score of 2.0 or higher is required for entry into Consecutive Interpreting (INTR 220) which is a prerequisite to all other interpreting courses.
  • An ASLPI score of 2.5 or higher is required for entry into the final course, Practicum (INTR 241).
*There are some courses in the program that students can take in order to prepare for the ASLPI.
Students may complete all ASL course work (ASL levels 1-5), Advanced Conversational ASL (ASLS 214) and Pre-Interpreting Skills (INTR 216) prior to obtaining their ASLPI score.
