Set yourself up for success.

The key to success in college is to build strong foundations. That’s why we encourage students to complete their English and math requirements in their first year at CCBC.

In fact, nationwide research has shown that students who reach these requirements early are 48% more likely to graduate and successfully transfer to a 4-year institution.

You can even prep for success before you start classes. Half of students who retook their math placement were able to save a semester and take a higher-level math.

Whatever your career path, CCBC offers English and math courses that meet your needs. With online and on-site options, multiple start dates, and tutoring services, you’ll be well-equipped for success.

English

By taking English courses, you’ll not only sharpen your composition, reading, and critical thinking skills—you also set the groundwork for research and writing assignments in other classes.

Whichever career pathway you take, English (ENGL) coursework equips you with invaluable skills for the professional world—and day-to-day!

All degree programs require the completion of ENGL 101, but some will also require ENGL 102. Depending on your placement, we also offer prerequisite ESOL and Academic Literacy (ACLT), which you can take together with English 101 which prepare you for future coursework.

Mathematics

Math is everywhere and a vital part of your studies—no matter what you want to do. Even if you don’t plan to enter the S.T.E.M. field, the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills you develop will help you manage finances, time, and projects in your personal life.

Depending on your pathway, your faculty members or advisors should help you select the best math courses for you to take. If you require more than one course, they will also recommend that you complete your requirement without taking a break the following semester.

If you’re pursuing a program in the Arts, Criminal Justice & Law, Education, Humanities, or Social Science pathways, you’ll likely enroll in a quantitative literacy or statistics track, which often includes one of the following courses: Meanwhile, if you’re pursuing a program in the Business, Health professions, Mathematics and Science, or Technology and Engineering pathways, you'll likely enroll in the STEM track, which often includes one of the following courses: Depending on your placement, we also offer prerequisite courses which prepare you for future coursework.
