Like many who are called to veterinary care, Carleigh Adams has always had a passion for caring for animals. Her first job was at a boarding and grooming facility, followed by work in several kennels before she decided to pursue a degree in veterinary technology.
She chose CCBC because it offers the only American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)–accredited degree program in Maryland.
The hands-on experience on campus and during internships helps prepare you for the realities of working in animal care.
Registered veterinary technicians (RVTs) are vital members of the veterinary health care team, caring for animal patients while also communicating with and educating their human owners. CCBC’s Veterinary Technology program prepares students for this dual role through rigorous instruction and hands-on training in state-of-the-art facilities, including a private learning clinic. On campus, students perform examinations, follow veterinary imaging protocols and conduct clinical lab studies such as hematology, urinalysis and parasitology. They assist in surgeries, monitor anesthesia, draw blood, place IV catheters, collect urine samples, advice on nutrition and work with both large and small animals.
In their second year, CCBC helps place students in internships to further develop their skills.
“The hands-on experience on campus and during internships helps prepare you for the realities of working in animal care,” says Carleigh.
Those realities often differ from public perception.
“People either think we play with puppies and kittens all day or that we are doctors who can diagnose and prescribe medicine,” she says. “While we love a good puppy visit, we are there to support veterinarians in many ways, from educating clients to performing treatment plans written out by the veterinarian, much like a nurse in human medicine.”
“The teachers go above and beyond to prepare students for the national licensing exam,” Carleigh adds. With demand for veterinary technicians projected to grow 19% through 2033 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CCBC boasts a 100% job placement rate once graduates pass their board exam.
Thanks to the program, Carleigh is well on her way to a career as a veterinary technician, with the long-term goal of managing staff and ensuring clients receive the highest standard of care for their pets.
