Closings and Alerts

Emergency closing resources:

  • When the college closes because of severe weather or emergency conditions, we will announce cancellations of classes on television stations.
  • Closings and delays will be recorded on the weather line: 443.840.1711
  • Campus Alert is a free messaging service for the CCBC community that keeps you posted when any part of the college is closed for just about any reason.

Staying informed

We wish we could control the weather–and the news! Unfortunately, CCBC cannot control the accuracy or timing of mass media announcements. But our communications team works with these outlets to ensure announcements are on-time and as accurate as possible.

Closing levels

Decision factors and announcements

CCBC’s administration assesses the following factors when determining whether to reduce operations or to close the college due to inclement weather or other emergencies.

Decisions are made daily, including on weekends. No announcements are made via website, weather lines or other media unless there is an actual closing or delay message to be delivered. Unless otherwise announced, the college is open during normal operating hours.

The following factors may contribute to a decision to close campus or cancel classes: Public safety threats, public roads and on-campus conditions, weather forecast, anticipated absenteeism, scheduled on-campus events, Baltimore County Public Schools' and neighboring colleges decisions, Maryland State Government and predicted duration of an emergency, i.e., power outage.

Advance or next-day weather closing decisions will be made by 10:00 p.m. in order to be announced on the 11:00 p.m. news, if conditions merit such a closure. Decisions will be made daily, including on the weekends.

Same day weather closing decisions will be based on the assessment of conditions, with recommendations to be made by 5 a.m.

Delayed openings are preferably at standard delayed opening times of 10:00 a.m., noon, or 5 p.m. Conditions on campus(es) are to be reassessed 2 ½ hours prior to scheduled late opening, e.g. noon opening determination to be made at 9:30 a.m.; 5 p.m. opening determination to be made at 2:30 p.m. In all cases above, determination will be made to open as decided or close for remainder of the day/evening. Utility and safety closing will be made as soon as practical.

Class times are defined as follows:

  • Morning classes are defined as those starting before 12 p.m.
  • Afternoon classes are defined as those starting after 12 p.m. and before 5 p.m.
  • Evening classes are defined as those starting after 5 p.m.

In the event that the college (or a specific campus) opens late, classes and labs which would meet for less than 30 minutes will be canceled. Classes and labs that would meet for 30 minutes or more will be held, unless otherwise noted by the teacher.

Closings and delays impact on-site and simulcast classes only; all remote classes will continue as scheduled.

Off-Campus Classes

If CCBC is closed, classes taught at non-CCBC locations (community centers, senior centers, schools, etc.) will also be canceled. The exceptions would be field placement classes such as internships and clinical placements held at employer sites, in which case the individual employer or building owner will direct you with instructions.

When Baltimore County Public Schools are closed, all CCBC classes offered at BCPS locations are canceled.
