Advisement and Registration Procedures
CCBC Catonsville takes great pride in its accredited Mortuary
Science Program. The Program is a popular one. As a result,
there is great demand for classes at registration time.
Advisement and registration for Mortuary Science classes are held
separately from the regular advisement and registration at the
College. The curricula of these students must be closely tracked
to ensure that they all complete the proper courses in the
prescribed order.
Each semester, students are informed of the dates of advisement
and registration well in advance--at least two to three weeks.
This is plenty of time in which to notify their employers and to
adjust any other obligations they may have scheduled. This also
affords enough time for employers to make contingency plans should
their employees or apprentices take longer than expected at
advisement and registration.
The advisement and registration system for Mortuary Science
classes at CCBC Catonsville is one of fairness and equity for all
students. No one is given preferential treatment. It is done, as
it has been for years, on a first-come, first-serve basis when
filling classes. The number of students allowed in classes which
have laboratory practice is set by the American Board of Funeral
Service Education. This number cannot be adjusted. A designated
ratio of students to instructors is specified so that maximum
opportunity for learning exists. Also, prerequisite classes are
determined for a reason, so the appropriate knowledge base will be
in place for successful class progression.
Since 1972 when the Mortuary Science Program began at CCBC
Catonsville, classes have been scheduled in the late afternoon and
evening in order to accommodate funeral home daily activities. No
classes are held on Fridays. Advisement and registration for the
Mortuary Science Program is held in two waves each semester. The
first wave is for students who have 15 (fifteen) credits to
complete toward graduation or will graduate after completing the
upcoming and the following semester. (Example: Those eligible
for the first wave of advisement and registration for Fall
Semester must either have only 15 credits to complete toward
graduation or will graduate after the following Spring Semester.)
The second wave is designated for the rest of the Mortuary Science
Students. This is done to ensure that those who will soon be
graduating will secure spaces in classes needed to graduate.
In keeping with first and second wave criteria, those students who
have never had an opportunity to enroll in MORS 111/113 will be
given a first chance before any student is provided a second
opportunity to enroll. If a student has failed MORS 111/113 or
dropped the class for any reason, they will be placed on a waiting
list and will be admitted to the class on a space-available basis.
Again, it is the student's responsibility to attend these
advisement and registration sessions. Students who miss these
days will follow first-come, first-serve class space placement,
subject to availability. Every student in the Mortuary Science
Program receives equal treatment and concern by our dedicated
faculty and staff.
The Mortuary Science Program will be offered Monday through
Thursday; students will be off on Friday.
Classes will be scheduled after 3:00 in the afternoon.
Students must maintain a 2.0 average and familiarize themselves
with the current college catalog.
